Remember Show No Mercy? Take that album, combine it with Reign in Blood, then punch it with Diabolica and you have World Painted Blood. Punk, metal, and just insanity make this Slayer release one of my favorites. Tom singing till he's horse and breaking cords, totally awesome. Dave on the drums, couldn't be better.
The DVD is ok, not anything like I thought it would be. For some reason I had hoped it would be a long episode of Metalocalypse, nope. It's a bit arty for Slayer, I would pass.

no this is not 1986 anymore so quit expecting slayer to do another reign in blood. they allready did it and changed metal forever by doing so......this cd CRUSHES! ther are a few songs that are a bit on the mellow side ala seasons in the abyss but it is a dark type of mellow with nice hooks. all of the elements that make slayer metal gods are here, fast galloping riffs with drumming to match and their signature crazy tremolo solos. if i had to compare this to other slayer cd's id say this one is a combo of rib,soh and sita. go listen to psycopathy red and tell me that aint something that could have been taken stright from reign in blood, it could be a lost track from 86. the production is very raw and real sounding. the guitars are raw and under distorted and the drums sound organic and not sampled and overproduced. i would have preferred a more modern production but this rawness suits the band well.
thrash to death you will not be dissapointed! SLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does everyone remember what Slayer was like before they put out "Christ Illusion" and thier new CD? Well... I'll tell ya, Slayer, In case you are not familiar with them, are one of the most infamous metal bands that has ever stalked the planet. As far as being infamous I refer to thier lyrical subject matter. I can recall when I was growing up how afraid people were of Slayer. Even dudes that were into Metallica and Megadeth and stuff like that would say: "that's some crazy stuff, man." The Lyrics were gross and full of satanism. Slayer was not the first band to sell the devil but they did it in a grand style. Before them, a band called Black Sabbath lightly toyed with 'ol scratch. A few years later another band, Venom, who would be very influential to Slayer blasted a blaze of fire across the new wave of British heavy metal. Unlike Black Sabbath, Venom did not sugarcoat Satan. Practically all of Venom's albums have satanic symbols and meanings on thier covers and most of thier songs are about demons, sacrifice, and possession. Then, in 1983, a new band comes along with the same idea and similiar image. Slayer sang about the same type of stuff but with a different delivery. One which had never been heard before. Along with the blood-soaked words of death spewed out by Tom Araya, we also had music played at breakneck speed. Dave Lombardo, Slayer's drummer, played faster than anyone else at the time. He was also a wiz at double bass. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman played thier guitars like madmen! King and Hanneman were a match made in hell. Both of them would become influential themselves in thier own right as metal guitarits. Tom Araya also played the bass as well as doing vocal duties. Tom's voice is one of the most recognizable in metal and Slayer is known the world over.
Since the release of the first album, "Show no Mercy" in 1983, The band would go on to reach critical acclaim with records such as "Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss", and "God Hates us All." Slayer had proven to the world that evil lives and would carry on the fight even to this day...26 years later. Whereas Slayer would release mostly great albums throughout the 1980's and 90's, after 2001's "God Hates us All" I would have to say they lost it after that CD. "World Painted Blood" in my opinion is Slayer's version of Metallica's "Load". A lot of what we love about Slayer is present on the new record but, there is a little too much different stuff going on. Stuff I've never heard Slayer do. There also seems to be something missing in the sound of the album as a whole. Don't get me wrong, It's still heavy but, it just don't sound right. Sounds kind of thin and light for a Slayer CD. I don't think Tom Araya is loud enough either. The songs themselves are a bit weak and discombobulated and never really seem to go anywhere. Maybe I need to give it a few more listens to let it sink in some more. I don't know. One song I remember I really liked was "Public Display of Dismemberment". I thought it was a really great tune on an otherwise drab album.
A DVD is included in the deluxe edition for a few dollars more. Is it worth it? Nah...unless you are a die-hard Slayer fan like myself. Slayer could put thier name on a turd and I would buy it. The DVD contains a short film. It is made with photos that move in a sort of "stop action" style with parts of the new album as it's soundtrack. It's kind of cool. It's cool that they did something like that. It's the first album I ever bought that included something other than behind the scenes stuff on a DVD.
Will Slayer make a comeback after this one? I hope so. I really don't know how much longer they will be around. At least we have all the great music they made before thier last 2 CD's. Oh well, once again in the future when Slayer puts out another new record, I will be waiting and hoping that it leaves these last two albums in the dust.

Great album. Don't by deluxe DVD version! Nov 11, 2009
The album is really impressive! If you don't like it then your probably not playing it loud enough! It has a raw sound with classic attributes, brutal political and religious statements. Very aggressive in the lyrics blended with blazing, shredding, screaming guitars and Lord Dave blasting the perfection only he can. Don't buy the deluxe version. The little film is annoying and doesn't reflect the album in any way. I would've loved a "making of" but got this lame waste of time. Some people and their art. Hard to believe Slayer approved it. They may not have. Even Dez of Devil Driver didn't know what picture the last ablum had on the back. He was smiling. Any way. Buy the CD only and crank it! There's supposed to be 4 different covers available but I have heard no info if the songs will vary. Great historical thrash by the legendary F*****N SLAYER!

Still, looks, sounds, and smells like slayer! Nov 10, 2009
I'm 34 and have listened to or known of slayer since mmmm bout 12 or so, that being said i've seen and heard them do it all. So is that good or bad, well mostly good. Slayer have never changed which at some point people have said paints slayer into a corner, well lets put it this way. With the name Metallica, it can be anything, which they did, alternametal, ballads, thrash, power type metal and even some country rock. A name like Megadeth you wouldnt expect a change but they went all over the place in the early 90's as did a lot of metal/rock bands in that time. Well did slayer change NOPE, they came out faster and more brutal than ever with one of my favorite all time albums Divine Intervention. Then after that, the forgettable Undisputed Attitude punk cover album which was about the only forgettable album they ever did, but spawned the classic original Gemini, which never got the recognition it deserves. Well now onto World Painted Blood, heres pros and cons rather than going on and on about the history or future of Slayer, which being in there 40's still looks promising!!
World Painted Blood-An eerie backwards Tom Araya, with a drum roll and something that sounds like he's talking to a child. Its fast furious and very creepy mainly because it talks about things going on now, that werent! when the song was written. "Like a disease spreading death, erasing your existence"...swine flu anyone? Also the middle break just has the coolest groove with tom speaking his usual evil lyrics, about being (de)manufactured in HELL!!
Unit 731-Havent given this one the MOST thorough listen yet, and not sure what its about, but seems like a war song, similar to War Esemble Expendable youth. Another fasty, with great old school riffs, and double bass. Oh yeah and Tom of course.:D
Snuff-No its not about copenhagen, rubbing or spitting. It tells graphically the story of Underground Snuff Films, for those who dont know watch the movie 8mm. Simulated, rape, violence, sex and murder, typical slayer!! Not my favorite, the riffs are enh bland, but still fast and good none the less.
Beauty Through Order-Definitely another favorite, this song reeks of old school SOUTH OF HEAVEN's, SPILL THE BLOOD. Love it, all about seduction, blood, immortality, and vampires. Listen to the mid section you'll hear BEHIND THE CROOKED CROSS, and a little part also of SILENT SCREAM. Rocks.
Hate Wordwide- "I'm a godless heretic, not a god fearing lunatic, that's why its become my obsession to treat god like an infection", that says it all, fast all the way, and very very catchy.
Public Display Of Dismemberment- I look for Cannibal Corpse to cover this one soon, sounds like a title they would come up with. Dave shows off his blast beats, double bass combo chops, and definitely has the Death Metal feel riffs, quite an extreme song even for Slayer. Fast and relentless.
Human Strain- Ennh this is one i really don't care for, a lot like Eyes Of The Insane which was probably the worst slayer song since, i dunno that last bad slayer song. They really don't have many but this one i just couldnt hack. A bit slow and bland.Blah
Americon-Probably worse than Human Strain, actually HS is better, if thats possible. It has some good speed in parts, and good riffs, but a bit to punkish for me.
Psychopathy Red- NOW WE'RE TALKING @#$% YEAH!!. Pure old school Slayer from beginning to end, its a cross of Dittohead and Angel Of Death, mainly the main break riff of Angel, and the speed(with lyrics) and drums sound of Divine. I can't believe tom is 48!! and belts out screams that i couldnt even dream off, listen at the end Tom sounds like he's screaming on HELIUM!!! lol. Awesome.
Playing with Dolls-Not Bad, its slow and has that Desire, and Dead Skin Mask feel, not sure if its the serial killer song of the album but maybe so. Havent listened to it enough to really tell. A decent track though. I'm stuck on the others:D
Not Of This God-Crazy riffs, fast as hell, and rivals(speed wise) anything on Reign in Blood, along with Psychopathy. Reminds you of God Hates Us All, just faster. In other words Slayer are not of THIS god, but rather the one below, i would say(wink)
So that somes it up boys and girl and boys. Its good, (much better than Christ Illusion, which was good in itself) but they topped it, and this is definitely the best and fastest Slayer since Divine, which is a great thing for all us hard core fans. Btw i saw and interview on Youtube where they asked Kerry King why the songs they were writing were SLOWER, uhh i think not, 85% of the album is racing fast, so they must have changed there minds since then. Also the theory of retirement, as stated by Tom Araya cringing at being an almost 50 year old headbanger. Nahh i don't see it, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD, makes a great return for Slayer, but hey they never really left, just improved after some ruff patches in the music world. KUDOS!
