Description:

An album like this could cement Sarah McLachlan as a middle-of-the-road crooner ready for the Andy Williams Christmas Show, but there's more beneath the surface of Wintersong than just Christmas chestnuts, over-roasting on an open fire. Longtime McLachlan producer Pierre Marchand blurs the borders with ambient sound effects, distorted guitars, and subtle echoes. He adds a Mark Isham-esque muted trumpet solo emerging out of reverse echoes on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" as if viewing the song through a distorted mirror. Violins that sound like they're being blown through a Leslie speaker combine unpredictably with a banjo on "O Little Town of Bethlehem." And on the seventh song, McLachlan finally kicks the album into another gear, turning "The First Noël" into a storming entreaty backed by tribal drums and surging low strings. Her voice is like the serene angel amidst the raging storm. I wish McLachlan had taken more chances like this, instead of the subtle framing she employs around melodies that remain true to form. Surprisingly, the more contemporary songs by John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot are the least inventive. Her reading of Mitchell's incandescently wistful "River" is overly faithful to the original, and Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" sounds like karaoke, right down to the Spector-esque production and children's choir. But given that Lennon's prayer for peace still remains unanswered, that fidelity could be intentional. Regardless, this is familiar Christmas fare delivered in an intimate and ethereal fashion that will satisfy those who believe in the nostalgic spirit of the season. --John Diliberto

5Atmospheric Christmas Album  Oct 07, 2009
This is a fantastic album. Includes some songs I hadn't heard in years with a personal twist. Sarah McLachlan has a beautiful voice and this is now one of my all time favourite Christmas Albums alongside Celine Dion's 'These are Special times'.

5Pick me up off the floor please.  Sep 16, 2009
Okay I just got to tell you that this is the most absolutely beautiful Christmas album I have ever heard. I love
Christmas alot but regular Christmas Music can get a little 'jingly' sometimes; but the songs Sara did on this album
just blew me away, think of phrases like 'hauntingly beautiful', 'extraordinary vocal range', 'refreshingly fresh'.
Got the cd about a month ago and been listening to it alot since so its definately the Christmas
music thats cool to play any time of year and I like that.

5Brilliant mellow Christmas album  Sep 07, 2009
This is my first Sarah McLachlan album but it's most unlikely to be my last. Sarah has selected some familiar classics, singing them straight with one exception, together with some less familiar songs and one self-penned song, that being the title track.

The set opens with a cover of John Lennon's classic song, Happy Xmas war is over. There was a time when I didn't come across covers of this song but it is definitely on
its way to becoming a Christmas standard, judging by the frequency with which I now come across covers. Maybe that's a reflection of the troubled world in which we live, where war seems never-ending. Actually, history shows that it was ever thus, but the modern media mean that we are more aware of faraway wars than our ancestors were in centuries past.

Another song that is fast becoming a Christmas standard after a slow start is Joni Mitchell's River. More established standards to be found here are I'll be home for Christmas, O little town of Bethlehem, Silent night and Have yourself a merry little Christmas, all of them with familiar arrangements. Sarah also sings a superb version of In the bleak midwinter, one of my favorite carols but less frequently found on Christmas albums than the other established standards. The medley of First Noel and Mary Mary is an unexpected surprise, as Sarah has arranged it in her own way, which is noticeably different from the traditional arrangement of these songs.

The title track is a superb ballad. Sarah also revives Song for a winter's night (a Gordon Lightfoot song) and Christmas time is here (which also appears on Skaggs family Christmas, though I've heard it elsewhere).

This mellow Christmas album is definitely not party music, but you can enjoy it in the quieter moments around Christmas.

3Not as good as I expected from Sarah  Jul 08, 2009
I could not wait to get this Christmas CD because I love Sarah's voice, but I was disappointed by this collection. First of all, I hate the song "River", it is the most depressing downer of a song I have ever heard, and certainly not a song that you want to listen to if your goal is to get in the spirit of the joy and warmth of the holidays. Secondly, Sarah- why, with your beautiful angelic voice, did you have to massacre the classic "What Child Is This"??? I was anticipating this to be one of her best songs on the album, because its haunting melody and lyrics should have suited her voice perfectly, however Sarah changed the notes of the song so its almost not even recognizable as the Christmas classic that it is. She totally ruined the song, which I didn't think was possible. I am SOOO sad about it! She should have just sung it the right way, and it would have been outstanding!! The rest of the CD is fairly good. The Charlie Brown classic "Christmastime Is Here" is soft and beautiful, and personally I do like her version of "So This Is Christmas (War is Over)". So, I listen to about half the songs on the album, and skip over the other half. I wish she had just sung all the songs the right way with traditional music and lyrics, and she would have had a much better album.
