A different cut above Jan 24, 2010 "West," sung by Lucinda Williams, was a very distinctive vocal arrangement of country and rock.
Although, in my opinion, the best song on this CD was clearly "Are You Alright?" I feel this song hit a higher level and made it a tough act to follow.
"Mama You Sweet," came in a distant 2nd and the remainder of vocals were good to listen to, but did not register a high approval, in my view.
I would recommend this CD because of it's unique sounds and the fact that Lucinda Williams puts a lot of soul in all of her songs.
If one prefers western with a blend of rock, then this is your album.
Definitely worth purchasing, just to hear "Are You Alright?"
WEST IS BEST Dec 09, 2009 Having the majority of Lucinda's albums, I must say this is the one that stays in my CD player the most. All the songs on this album are great and some in particular will keep you thinking long after you hear them (Fancy Funeral, What If). You may want to hear "Come On" in private, especially away from children or the prude due to subject matter and how she lyrically gives the kiss off to a guy that "didn't know where to put his hands", and he couldn't even make her Come (On) (you'll get the idea at first listen). One of Lucinda's best albums, followed by Essence and A World Without Tears.

Sweet, tender, pain, love and loss Oct 08, 2009 The first time I can recall knowing about Lucinda was on a tribute to Gram Parsons show with the some of the best and well-known alternative country singers. I didn't pay much attention then and I knew of her as one who was in that crowd.
I have so enjoyed this CD, I love her raspy voice, the lyrics filled with hurt, pain, loneliness, wonderment, sex, love and loss. Listening to this is like having her for a morning of conversation, telling you what is going on lately and with beautiful musical melody. Especially with Fancy Funeral, which I believe she had just lost her mother. There is a sweet tribute to her mother called Mama You Sweet.
One of my favorites is Are You Alright? It's the craziness of love, when someone walks out on you, with no explanation, nothing.
Listening to this is also like one long song, beautiful arrangements, sexy voice, and pleasing musical sounds. It's about the lyrics, her message, the tone.....Rizzo

Sorry Lucinda Jul 01, 2009 I am a huge fan but the truth is this album is a big step down from the levels she achieved with Carwheels and continuing with her next two albums. "I'm Learning How..." is an absolute classic. For that alone I give the album two stars. The rest of the material ranges from mediocre to stuff that is cringeworthy. Her attempts to loosen things up and write stream of consciousness lyrics or perform in a totally spontaneous way plays to her weaknesses. Lucinda is best when she creates finely crafted songs and then works with a good producer to hone the sound of each song. Sorry Lucinda.
Another Great Lucinda Williams CD!!!! Feb 22, 2009 There have already been plenty of reviews, I just want to say, this is a great cd. I really liked the song "Wrap my Head" (Wrap my Head around That). This is a great cd, and I recommend it. Thanks!!!
