Best album I've heard for a while Aug 05, 2010 It's the best album I've heard for a really long time. Rarely do I like almost all songs on an album, and this one is such an exception. Excellent - sounds fresh and interesting compared to most rock albums released these days. It's my first contact with Modest Mouse music, now I need to try their older records.
Best album I'd heard in a while Mar 31, 2010 There isn't one track that I don't like on this album. The first 9 songs are amazing.
plenty-a listenable Dec 08, 2009 I'll be honest- most Modest Mouse songs sound the same to me, but it's not necessarily a BAD thing. They DO have a winning and successful formula that focuses on strong songwriting skills, decent lyrics, and a slight bit of diversity as far as their approach to focusing on melodic instrumentation goes.
Not a bad band at all, and this album happens to be one of their highlights. "Spitting Venom" is, for me at least, the clear highlight because of the uniqueness in the way the song is written. It starts off like some somber guitar-driven Bruce Springsteen track, then the song picks up with better vocals, and the song continues to impress me from there on out. A great song that one is. The rest of the album is equally as impressive, and this album wouldn't be a bad place to start off.
Lopsided, but the first half is great Aug 20, 2009 Modest Mouse
We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank; 2007
Epic Records
My Rating: 60/100
Despite the nautically-doomed title, the Mouse proves with their fifth album proper that they will indeed float on. Nowhere near as heavy with the weight of mortality as their previous offering, this is a meaty power-pop record with the standard Mouse-eccentrities turned up to 11. Themes are varying yet unified, meaning the record doesn't suffer from the monotony that sunk GOOD NEWS,and there's even a moment or two of jubilant quasi-optimism ("Dashboard", "Missed the Boat"). Unfortunately, the overall experience suffers from an extreme lopsidedness that will most likely have you switching to something else after track 7. In the final analysis, though, WE WERE DEAD BEFORE THE SHIP EVEN SANK is a nice recovery from the near disaster that was GOOD NEWS. I'll be looking forward to the next full-length offering from the Issaquah's finest.

Effing Great Mar 01, 2009 This CD is wonderful, and with each listen, little moments of bliss reveal themselves. The lyrics are troubled and perfect and comforting, the music alternates between ecstatic and messy in a great way.
No doubt this is it.
Look out for Missed the Boat especially for special awesome.
