A great album with not so great songwriting Oct 26, 2009 The Ting Tings are a British duo comprised of singer/songwriter Katie White and multi-instrumentalist/producer Jules De Martino. Their debut album, "We Started Nothing" is an album that is unapologetically fun and dance oriented. While the musical arrangements are good and the production is great, it's lacking in other areas- particularly in the area of songwriting. While Katie does a decent job at singing, her songwriting is a little infantile. I find myself listening to songs like "Fruit Machine", "That's Not My Name", and the title track and I try very hard to keep a straight face. Even the album's first single "Great DJ" is a little silly at times. Overall, it's fun and catchy, but I was expecting better songcraft.
Solid cd Sep 04, 2009 The recording quality is very solid and a great listen. Tough to get the lyrics out of your head.
Uninhibited, and Just Plain Fun! Aug 13, 2009 I heard "That's not my name" on a movie I was watching, and looked this band up. I got this debut album and first I liked some of the songs. Before long, I liked all of them (all but one, that is).
There's just SOMETHING about this sound that is really, really, really...uh....FUN! The rhythm is hypnotic, and each song's progression is addictive, I guess. The lead singer's voice is sexy, uninhibited and fun-loving. The choice of melody can only be described as uninhibitedly creative. I'm not sure why I like it so much, but I do.
Here's what I feel about the lead singer after listening: She says whatever she wants to say, in whatever way she wants to. If she likes how a sound comes out of her throat, she's going to use that sound. If the sentence doesn't fit, she makes it fit. If the words don't rhyme, she makes them rhyme. If she likes a sound she hears, she adds it to a song.
"Traffic Light" is the only song I don't like. It's tepid and makes me emotionally tired. But "Shut up and let me go!" is fun, with a serious side as the protagonist takes her destiny back. Impacilla Carpisung -- I don't know what the heck it's about, but it's really funny. I'm pretty sure she made up her own language just for the song. "Be the one" is one I like just for its sort-of-serious-singsong and rhythmic beats. It's also my favorite, I think. That might change tomorrow though. I can't stop listening to this album.
I didn't like "We started nothing" until I'd heard it several times. But then it started sounding good too. I know you sometimes have to listen to an album several times to get a taste for more than one or two songs. With this album, I listened straight through on a flight to Europe, and enjoyed most of it. But it took about five times through to become an addict. It's better than drugs though---it just keeps getting better.
I'm going to own everything this band ever puts out. I am really glad I bought this CD.

what word is worse than nauseating ? Aug 04, 2009 When I hear bands like this that perhaps come out of the mouthbreathers of emo inspired music setups or Stefani laced inceptions, I often look at the branches of the trees swaying in the distance, look out on the oceans white caps, smile, and close my eyes, as I know that I have a chance in the music industry.
This is whiney, stink up my house and car with adolescent lyrics and ginger bread music making, utter crap.
