An Album That Mattered Oct 02, 2009 This is a record Rascall Flatts, Kenny Chesney and all the rest of CMT's current parade of stars should listen to and ask themselves; "Am I even close?" And their fans might listen to as well and ask; "Where has this kind of country gone?" This was a record that mattered, this is a recording that captured what Outlaw Country really was. Instead of a singer looking for an audience, Waylon Jennings and his band were artists audiences were looking for. The first 5 tracks of this CD are worth the price of the entire 2 CD set as Waylon comes out of the gate electrified, in control and showing why he became the first country artist to sell millions, not thousands of records. Unlike today, he pays tribute to the roots of country music and the giants that went before, but then proves he is worthy to stand beside them. And he took his place among the giants by doing things his way, as the song says. Buy this CD, sit back and listen to greatness as Waylon and his band take you on every kind of twist and turn and twang the best of this kind of country had and still has, to offer.
If You Only Own One Waylon Album.... Jul 30, 2009 This is the one to get! The remaster sounds great. It's so good in fact that it's hard to believe this was recorded in September of 1974 in Dallas and Austin Texas; that's five years before I was born. It doesn't get better than this.
As soon as the first line of "T for Texas" kicks in, you know you're in for something special. Waylon's passion, energy, and stage presence were somehow captured that night on record. Usually a live album fails to capture an experience like this. I know, because I have heard a lot of live records in my days and this is without a doubt the best I've ever experienced. I say experienced because until I put this on all I had ever done before was listen to a performance.
Best Country Album Ever Mar 27, 2009 You can hardly listen to any of Waylon's hits without realizing what a great singer he was. But nowhere is the breadth of Waylon's talent more evident than on this expanded (2 disc) live album. Waylon is tough and sensitive, simple and insightful, angry and humble, melancholy and funny. You may, or may not, realize that Waylon was a great guitarist based on his studio recordings. But Waylon's guitar playing on Live is distinctively terrific. Ralph Mooney (pedal steel) and the rest of the band complement Waylon perfectly. Full of hits, near hits, and obscure gems (42 songs worth) from start to finish. Great singing, great playing, and a whole lot of fun. One of the great live albums of any genre. Country music don't get any better than this.
Solid Outlaw Country Gold Nov 03, 2007 This 2cd set contains the best versions of "This time" and "Just to satisfy you" ever recorded (studio versions included). This is Waylon at the top of his game and is my all time favorite live country cd. Everything else on it is also fabulous. I have both the early single cd release and the extended two cd version. I give this (the extended version) as a gift frequently to people. If you're a fan of outlaw country and you don't like this then you're not American friend. Buy it.
THE Waylon album to have May 09, 2007 One day after Waylon signed his landmark contract with RCA in 1974 granting him complete creative control he was booked to play CBGB's in New York city. At that time punk was king and the clientele of that particular establishment was predictably the saftey-pin-in-the-cheek crowd. When Waylon and Company stepped on the stage and looked out at the assembled mass he said "I don't know what kind of show y'all are used to, but this is a country music show."
Someone yelled from the back ofthe room "Who the &*^% are YOU??!"
Waylon replied "I'm Waylon G(& D^%$# Jennings, now shut up!"
He went on to do three encores.
On this disc he makes that statement again and again through the swagger, bravado and energy he expends on every song. There's no point in belaboring the obvious. It has been previously well documented that this is a quite hefty 42 track, two disc set chock full of Waylon goodness from beginning to end. The only thing I can add to what's been written is that this is more than Waylon's music. In the nearly two hours this disc takes up we get a glimpse the man's LIFE and his dedication to what he'd started going all the way back to his days with Buddy Holly. This is truly an amazing album. Buy it and request rush delivery.
