Description:

Chevelle has been releasing solid, if not entirely original-sounding, albums for the better part of a decade now and Vena Sera serves as another pleasant but workaday entry in the band's still sparse oeuvre. The group's continued debt to Tool remains obvious on the hard-hitting opener "Antisaint" with its throbbing guitar work and from-the-gut vocals and can also be heard during the arena-ready stomp "The Fad." There are few surprises throughout, very little we haven't already heard from Chevelle and its contemporaries before: The pulsating, detuned riffs that populate the mosh-intensive "Humanoid" and the fairly pallid late-album arrival "Midnight to Midnight" (which could have been a serious radio contender circa 1999) share space with the uplifting guitar figures of the slightly pop-inflected "Brainiac" and the nearly anthemic "Well Enough Alone" to familiar but comforting effect. Still, lovers could do far worse than dive in and enjoy some workmanlike riffs delivered in an enthusiastic fashion that many of this band's imitators will never manage to muster. Vena Sera is decent through and through but hardly ever life-changing.––Jedd Beaudoin

5One of the few albums where EVERY song is good!  Jul 07, 2010
I don't write many reviews, but I had to write one about this album after being amazed at just how good it is.
For awhile I had three other Chevelle albums (Point #1, This Type of Thinking..., and Wonder What's Next) and liked them a lot.
I took a break from Chevelle for a little while, then came back to them recently by catching myself up with Vena Sera and Sci-Fi Crimes. Sci-Fi Crimes is pretty good in my opinion, having some very good songs and some average songs.
I expected the same out of Vena Sera - some very good songs and some average ones.
Now after having listened to it every day for over three months, I am still surprised at how much I think EVERY song is awesome. Yeah I have favorites like "The Fad", "Saturdays",& "Humanoid" for example, but I love EVERY song. I'm 37 years old, and I can't remember feeling this way about any album in my life. This is now easily my favorite album of all time, and I recommend it big time to anyone that listens to anything close to this type of music.

5My only regret is never having seen them in concert  Jul 02, 2010
I just bought this CD and Sci-Fi Crimes and my only regret is that I have never seen Chevelle live. Something which I hope to remedy some day. There are few bands out there from which I own more than one or two albums. I now own four Chevelle albums and have loved all of them. Vena Sera seals them as one of my favorite bands. The music and vocals are beautiful and each has something unique, something new.

3Maybee needed a tune up?  Feb 12, 2010
This album seems to be a bit distracted. If you listen to this Kind of thinking...back to back with this album, youll understand. Not as defined in song structure or energy.still decent

5An Amazing CD from an amazing band!  Sep 21, 2009
I personally loved every minute of this CD. I own all of their CDs and none of them have been less than fantastic. I love Chevelle!

Loved these Chi-town guys' last two records to death. This one has some of the same elements, but things have changed. And I can't tell what. But for some reason, the number of catchy, memorable songs has seriously decreased. The album has strong points, but a couple more weak ones.
