Description:

Chevelle has been releasing solid, if not entirely original-sounding, albums for the better part of a decade now and Vena Sera serves as another pleasant but workaday entry in the band's still sparse oeuvre. The group's continued debt to Tool remains obvious on the hard-hitting opener "Antisaint" with its throbbing guitar work and from-the-gut vocals and can also be heard during the arena-ready stomp "The Fad." There are few surprises throughout, very little we haven't already heard from Chevelle and its contemporaries before: The pulsating, detuned riffs that populate the mosh-intensive "Humanoid" and the fairly pallid late-album arrival "Midnight to Midnight" (which could have been a serious radio contender circa 1999) share space with the uplifting guitar figures of the slightly pop-inflected "Brainiac" and the nearly anthemic "Well Enough Alone" to familiar but comforting effect. Still, lovers could do far worse than dive in and enjoy some workmanlike riffs delivered in an enthusiastic fashion that many of this band's imitators will never manage to muster. Vena Sera is decent through and through but hardly ever life-changing.––Jedd Beaudoin

4Chevelle Returns To Form (With Some Bad Friends)  May 17, 2009
First of all, let me say that this album is a HUGE turn for the better from "This Type of Thinking Could Do Us In." It is edgier, mixed more professionally, deeper and flat out brilliant. Usually and album this good is a straight 5 for me, but I feel I need to dock a star for the song "Humanoid." I know Chevelle is hard rock and sometimes sing of angry things... but this song is flat out hostile. The f-word was SO unneeded and I think Chevelle should take flak for alienating their more conservative fans.

That being said, GREAT album! (Remember you can always self-edit or delete "Humanoid" all together!)

5Fast Track To Becoming My Favorite Band  Mar 11, 2009
Though (for me) they've got plenty of compitition from bands including the Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins and of course Tool. This makes three phenominal albums in a row! You've got to admit 'phenominal' albums don't happen often much less consecutively. However Chevelle has shown us that it does in fact happen once in a great while. If they keep it up as long as some of the other bands I've mentioned they've got a sure shot at number one on my list.

The best tracks here are Antisaint, Saferwaters, Well Enough Alone, I Get It and Saturdays. Runners up are Brainiac, Straight Jacket Fashion and The Fad. The rest are not to be under estimated but they aren't necessarily album highlights. Simply put, if you've loved the last two albums -this one definitely measures up.

4Best to date  Nov 05, 2008
In my opinion, this is Chevelle's best effort yet. For me , "I Get It" is the best track on the CD. I enjoy "Saturdays", "The Fad" and "Midnight to Midnight" as well. Great production without being overly glossy. There are a lot of Heavy rock bands out there and Chevelle is really coming into their own identity with this one.

5Great from beginning to end  Oct 16, 2008
I honestly didn't expect much from this album. I used to appreciate the earlier work from Chevelle. Unfortunately the last couple albums didn't do too much for me. A couple good songs here and there, but weak overall. I decided to have a listen to Vena Sera after hearing some good things. I have to say it lived up to the hype. It took a few listens, but now I really enjoy this album. It definitly rekindled my interest in Chevelle. If you want a solid rock album you can play all the way through, then pick this up.
