Description:

Deluxe Version contains two additional audio tracks, a bonus DVD, and a mini cling sticker. Lil Mama's Jive Records debut, Voice Of The Young People explores the mindset of a young woman who is truly wise beyond her years. She has been in and out of various recording studios in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami and has worked with famed producers like Swizz Beatz and Scott Storch. Her debut album, Voice Of The Young People features a wide range of musical and topical issues. Lil Mama's first commercial hit "Lip Gloss" has quickly become a celebratory anthem for girls of all ages. Somber songs like "L.I.F.E." explore a foster child's journey and the hardships of a pregnant teenager while on "Broken Pieces" Lil Mama sings about a lost lover over a whining electric guitar rift. When not reflecting on her past heartache, the multi-talented triple threat proves she can throw down with the best of them. On "Shawty Get Loose" she teams up with label-mates Chris Brown and T-Pain for an up-tempo brag fest where Mama slices down the competition. "G-Slide (Tour Bus)" keeps the party going as Lil Mama raps over a Dirty South inspired 808 track while instructing her listeners how to do her dance. "What It Is (Strike A Pose)" features T-Pain and is a testament to Mama's wide ranging talent.

I really like this album and I was surprised by the depth of it. My Favorites includes L.I.F.E, G-Slide, Shawty Get Loose, and Girlfriend.

1not worth the extra money  Aug 03, 2008
I do not get excited when I hear lil mama's music.

All the songs on the album are just not good, they are not high energy and they try to copy other people's music. She has no unique style. The only track worth listening to is the one with chris brown, because he is a real artist and saves the track from sucking. So just down load that one song on the mp3 store and thats it. Lip gloss has to be the most annoying song in the world and you know that since she is 18 now, her next album is not going to be bubble gum rap about lip gloss anymore. Fits right into the typical stereotypes.

Worst judge on the face of this planet too, should get kicked off ABDC.

5Her "Lip Gloss is poppin'" and so is she...  May 04, 2008
This is my first review...

Celebrate the birth of Hip Pop!

There is so much more to this girl than "Lip Gloss". Alot of people clown her or don't take her seriously and just straight up won't give her a chance because of that single. I must admit, when I first heard it, I hated it too. Then it started growing on me. I know I ain't the only one this happened too! It's catchy! Then she dropped "G-Slide" and I straight up wasn't feelin' that either so I just kind of wrote her off and said to myself, "She ain't gon' get her album released droppin' crap like this." "Shawty Get Loose" leaked on the Internet and I still wasn't impressed. I didn't even download it at first because I was turned off that she jumped on the bandwagon and went to T-Pain for a hit. T-Pain gets on my nerves aside from other hot songs that he's been apart of (such as Britney Spears' "Hot As Ice" and E-40's "U And Dat"). It wasn't until after hearing the final version of "Shawty" (with Chris Brown added) several times that it began to grow on me and I said "ok, this isn't half bad." Then I seen the video and I instantly became an official fan. That video is hot! I love how she spits on the track. So now I'm wanting to hear more and I get somewhat excited when I find out on Billboard that "Shawty" is doing well and that her album will finally get released after being pushed back from last year.

So I buy the deluxe edition of the album because I wanted the bonus DVD. That's the one I suggest you buy because you're getting your money's worth. You also get a cling in the deluxe edition. You get a real inside look at Lil Mama and it makes me like her more. Her family (such as her mother, her father and her siblings) and other insiders speak on here. Appearances are made by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, Raekwon, her management, the guy who produced "Lip Gloss" etc. The DVD also has various clips of Mama before and after "Lip Gloss" popped off and one scene where she "punk'd" a guy in the studio was quite funny! You see alot of Mama on here so trust me, it's well worth getting. Now back to the music...

Like I said before, there's much more to Lil Mama than her single "Lip Gloss" but if you're looking for hardcore rap, then she's not the artist for you. She's the Voice of the Young People. This is for the teens, the young adults. She does talk about real life situations though such as love and her own life. There's not 20 tracks about makeup. LOL. Mama can spit. I love her swagga. She raps, she can dance like crazy and she sings. Yes, Lil Mama sings on this album and she's not bad at all. She's not like a Mariah Carey or a Whitney Houston or anything but she sounds good. She's cute too. :)
Tracks I recommend:
"Shawty Get Loose" featuring Chris Brown & T-Pain
"Lip Gloss/No Music" (the video version of "Lip Gloss" appears on this album that has her song "No Music" mixed in)
"What It Is (Strike A Pose)" (this joint is FIRE! I love it. One of my faves. It features T-Pain)
"Swim"
"Truly In Love"
"College" (Definitely recommended...listen to the lyrics. It's deep.)
"L.I.F.E." (Lil Mama gets deep here as well. Definitely something to check out. It's also her latest single.)
"G-Slide (Tour Bus)" (Yes, I like it now! LOL. Hated it then, like it now. It's hot!)
"Stand Up"
"Girlfriend (Dr. Luke Remix)" (Love the original version and this remix. Avril Lavigne rocks!)

Also the packaging of this album is wonderful. I was expecting so much less. I don't know about the standard edition but the deluxe edition's packaging is VERY nice. It's also comes with a cling with a picture of the album cover on it. I guess it's a window cling or something. I haven't used it yet but it's still nice. The album booklet is nicely done as well with pictures and everything. Very colorful and bright. You can tell the record label or whoever really invested time and money into it. The packaging alone gets 5 stars, I'm serious.

Lil Mama says she's the Voice of the Young People. Hey, I'm a "young people". LOL. So I support her.

4More than her lip gloss is poppin'.  May 02, 2008
I was pleasantly surprised at the strenghth, depth, and skill that 'Mama displays on her debut disc. The fact that it even came out so early in the year given the loss of her mother to colon cancer last year is a testament to this girl's sheer will to break the mold and make her mark. It's always great to see a woman in hip hop who's doing it more than 'shaking it fast', and isn't afraid to truly speak her mind (not what some label executive told her to speak). Occasionally she comes off as a little rough around the edges, but in three years time she'll be THE female MC to be reckoned with.
