2 1/2 Stars, Disapointing Cover Album Jul 06, 2010 In the beginning of the 2000`s Ozzy Osbourne was enjoying a newfound popularity with the success of the television series The Osbournes. All of a sudden Ozzy was once again interesting and attention worthy to the media. In 2001 he released his first album in six years Down To Earth followed by a live album Live At Budokan in 2002. Then in 2005 a cover album Under Cover came out, it was initially something Ozzy raved about and he thought the material on it was really great. I have to say I like Ozz`s enthusiastic opinion about these covers but I don`t think those covers are quite as good as he claims they are. I`m certainly not against a cover album and Ozzy`s song selection for Under Cover is interesting, the songs he chose to cover are actually very good, they rock and were made by respectable rock `n`roll artists. So what is there on a tribute album made by Ozzy? Of course he pays tribute to his primary influence The Beatles (as well as two songs by John Lennon), but there are also the Rolling Stones, Mountain, King Crimson and Mott The Hoople among others.
Zakk Wylde doesn`t play guitar on Under Cover, instead he is replaced here by Alice In Chains`Jerry Cantrell. Cantrell delivers a good performance on those covers but I believe that Zakk Wylde would have done a better job. Faith No More's Mike Bordin is once again on drums and Chris Wyse is on bass. The musicians playing with Ozzy deliver better performances than he does. One thing that does not help Under Cover is that 9 of those songs were previously released on the Prince of Darkness box set which believe or not came out the same year (bad call on that one). There are only four `new` songs which means that if you bought Prince of Darkness and are a collector who has to own everything you have to buy Under Cover to get 4 songs not available on PoD. The box set was first released and then Ozzy said he would complete the upcoming album of covers while he was on tour, guess it didn`t help because he could only provide four more songs and frankly most of the songs on UC sound dull and uninspired.
The choices of songs for this cover album are not odd and the originals are excellent and classics but some of them were probably not good choices for Ozzy. For instance "All The Young Dudes" was not a particular great choice for Ozzy to cover, besides some of those songs are not nor have ever been in Ozzy's vocal range which would be fine if he did them properly in his own way but that is not the case for most songs here. I do respect Ozzy for doing something different and paying tribute to these great artists, I really do, and I love Ozzy but Under Cover comes off as bad cover album even if you really want to like it (let's stay objective here). I still love the man Even with all the criticism it received there are however a few moments of brilliance on Under Cover such as the Rolling Stones cover "Sympathy for the Devil" and King Crimson`s "21st Century Schizoid Man". I have to say I also enjoyed The Beatles cover "In My Life" and Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" for what they were. There were some covers I did not hate but did not love either. I thought John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" would have fitted Ozzy pretty well but this cover sounds dry and tired.
Under Cover is a lacking album, there are definitely some likeable songs but you'll probably questioning others. It's a mixed bag what can I say? Is Under Cover worth your money? That depends, not everyone will like it to the same extent but there is some enjoyable material to make it worth hearing. I give it 2 1/1 stars but if you love it no one will hurt you for it.

TERRIBLE!!!!! May 29, 2010 I only listened to the previews of this album and DON'T BUY IT!!!!!! He picked the wrong songs to cover. Sunshine of Your Love (Cream), Sympathy for the Devil (The Rolling Stones), Mississippi Queen (Mountain). Those are classic rock songs, and they don't fit Ozzy's style. It sounds terrible. I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this.

Ozzy sucks. May 10, 2010 Ozzy is nothing but a sellout, overblown, self concerned ego maniac these days, filing lawsuits because he's jealous that the REAL Black Sabbath are showing him what true metal is. This album is terrible and didn't need to be made.

Butcher's return. Dec 31, 2009 This is a complete waste. Listen how Ozzy literally massacres Eric Burdon, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Cream, Plastic Ono Band, King Crimson... these covers are for laughs 'n' tears. Only Mountain's "Mississipi Queen" survives the butchery.
Run for your lives people!
