54.5 Stars! Fitting End to Great Legacy!  Jun 16, 2009
Man, I wasn't sure about this CD. I thought it might be one of those wack CDs with odds and ends put together, but after hearing it I believe Bun B when he says this is the CD UGK envisioned before Pimp C passed away. This is a dope CD with that funky funky production and Bun B and Pimp C on top of their game! Only loses points for the Akon song cause the hook could have been better on that one, the beat works well though on that one. Wish UGK wasn't gone, but I will gladly take this as their final CD!

RIP PIMP C!

4"UGK 4 LIFE, YOU BETTER ASK YO WIFE..."  Apr 29, 2009
I was first introduced to the Underground Kingz back in 92. "Pocket Full Of Stones" off the Menace II Society Soundtrack was good, but it didn't peak my interest. Then I heard them on Scarface's "My Homies" CD. Still not a lot of interest. I was then re-introduced to them on "Big Pimpin" and I was very interested. Then they dropped "Dirty Money" and I was hooked. I copped every CD since.

UGK is back with "UGK 4 Life" a recording of unreleased tracks. After listening you have to wonder how these songs did not make any of their albums. Especially their previous "Underground Kingz" release. This is classic UGK with talks about pimpin hoes, and candy paint. The gems of this album has to be "Purse Comes First", "Harry A**Hole" and "Everybody Wanna Ball" which uses a line from the late Pimp C's verse on "Big Pimpin". "7th Street Interlude" is a great but way too short track. It features a Pimp C solo over a slow pimped out beat. Bun B gets his turn on "Texas Ave Interlude" doing the same. As usual with any UGK album there are a slew of guest including Too Short and Snoop Dogg on "Steal Your Mind". E-40, B-Legit, 8Ball & MJG tag along on "Use Ta Be". But not all collabs work. Akon jumps on the horrible "Bad As Hell". But surprisingly no Devin the Dude or Scarface.

Overall this is a very good UGK album. It makes you sad knowing that UGK as we know it will be over. We know Bun B will hold it down again but without his brother there's something missing. He has been saying from the beginning "UGK 4 Life". Now without Pimp C, how long can UGK survive.

5UGK Went Out With A Bang; Another Classic  Apr 25, 2009
The legacy of UGK can be summed up in one word: LEGENDARY. Pretty much everything these guys have put their stamp on has been quality. That quality and consistency has earned them an untouchable status and a seat next to any of the other legends in all of hip hop.

After the untimely death of the much loved Pimp C, many reflected on the the things they have accomplished and pondered what could have been accomplished. Because Pimp C was such an outspoken character and a leader for southern hip hop...his death impacted nearly every southern rapper. Bun B decided to put together an album of real UGK tracks that were made before Pimp C died (not spliced together tracks) for one final celebration of UGK.

UGK IV Life is vintage UGK music. There's no sad songs reflecting on Pimp C but rather a collection of new songs that clearly defined UGK. This is really one of their greatest efforts. I admit it was kind of eerie on the intro to hear Pimp C proclaim "I'm in 2009 for you b's". That was a surprise. But it was not a surprise that the album is banging from front to back. Yes this greatness is competing with that of 2007's Double Disc Masterpiece and that's saying a lot with how much I praised that album.

The production is greatness capturing the southern blues or what Pimp C would call "country rap tunes". Riding to the max. The guests all serve their purpose. Lil Boosie & Webbie, Sleepy Brown, Big Gipp, Eightball & MJG, Snoop, Too Short, E-40, BLegit, Ron Isley, and Akon are all good friends of the late Pimp C and they give their best efforts here but UGK simply steal the show lyrically. They brought out an unknown classic from the South on Swishas & Erb where they sampled Society of Soul's Peaches & Erb off their one and only classic album Brainchild (you should check that out). My favorite songs are Feelin YOu, The Pimp & The Bun, Swishas & Erb, Purse Come First, and Da Game Been Good To Me.

UGK 4 Life is simply a must have album for 2009 and beyond. This is easily one of the best albums of the year so far and will continue to be for the rest of the year unless some truly amazing efforts await in the future. But I can't see anyone getting much better than this. UGK created a classic here. UGK will live forever through their music and I think that's what they intended. They've only further cemented their legacy. UGK 4 Life.
