Description:

After several years at the top of the rock world, Springsteen pulled back the reins on Tunnel of Love--a lot, not just a little. Members of the E Street Band played on the album but seldom in full-band arrangements. Then, too, there are the deeply conflicted songs--"Brilliant Disguise," "Two Faces," "Tunnel of Love," "One Step Up"--that may have been written in response to the imminent failure of his first marriage. There's more to the album than divorce-court play-by-play, however. There's also the raw rocker "Spare Parts," the sprightly "All That Heaven Will Allow," and the bold declaration "Tougher Than the Rest." Overall, these are some of his most thoughtful songs and most intimate performances. --Daniel Durchholz

5when it all falls apart, out go the lights...  Oct 07, 2009
While he has had greater releases before and after this album, Tunnel of Love remains one of my favorite Springsteen albums ever. I was just sitting in the library at college doing my work while listening to this album. When It was finished, I was like man, that's a great record. That it is. It contains several "should have been hits" in the US such as "Tougher than the Rest," "Walk Like A Man," and "Two Faces," while the hits (Tunnel of Love, Brilliant Disguise, All that Heaven Will Allow) are great. Just wish he would do them live more, but other than that, a great record all around.

Also, some dude who gave this album a one star was bashing Bruce, Bob Seger, Sheryl Crow, and The Rolling Stones. GROW UP. I like Green Day also, but that doesn't make me put these other great artists down!

5The Hair Stands Up On My Neck!!  Jul 08, 2009
This is my personal favorite record of Springsteen. For me it would be behind Darkness On The Edge of Town for Bruce's best album. I have listened to this album all Spring and the thoughts and emotions that he convey thoughout the album are very soul searching. I love the positive and the negative on this album. I love the scenes that are set on this album and the songwriting. Bruce bares his soul about relationships and it is such a heart wrenching record. Favorite cut is Valentine's Day, my hair still raises every time I hear that Beautiful, Beautiful song. I like all the other songs on this album too except for Aint Got You. I usually skip it. Spare Parts makes me want to dance. Walk Like A Man talks about being a man(ready or not), Brilliant Disguise is just wonderful, Two Faces talks about different personalities we all have, Tougher Than the Rest talks about hearts being stomped on and becoming hard. Great album if you enjoy Bruce looking inward...

5"Got to learn to live with what you can't rise above"  Jun 28, 2009
Following the biggest record of his career, rock icon Bruce Springsteen took a u-turn and followed Born in the U.S.A. with "Tunnel of Love" in 1987 as his first marriage unraveled. In light of Born in the U.S.A.'s rocking performances and profiles of post-Vietnam middle America, "Tunnel of Love" is a somber and personal effort. The heroes of "Tunnel of Love" are not the helpless working class of Born in the U.S.A. and its predecessors, but rather stricken, lonely individuals in love. While it contains some of his most poignant and poetic lyricism, musically it is simpler with soft, pleasant synthesizers and gentle chord progressions.

"Tunnel of Love" is unlike any of Bruce's other albums but is equally brilliant as any. It follows a loose story of the progression of a relationship from loneliness, growth, and joy through marriage, gradual disillusionment, loss, and recovery. It features a few of what are undeniably some of his finest songs to date. The hit single "Brilliant Disguise" is, in my opinion, one of his very best; a stirring profile of love's puzzlement with a truly gorgeous melody. The title track is equally magical, a seemingly joyful moment with epic tones and some of his most ingenious verses, yet undeniably dark omens. The third single, "One Step Up," is incredibly moving, finding a forlorn man looking at his lonesome self and tired of what he sees. These songs are brilliantly written, musically beautiful, and magnificently effective.

Still, "Tunnel of Love" functions best as an album, as the mood changes gradually from the hopeful first act to the philosophical second half. Opening with the classic solo blues of "Ain't Got You" and cautionary "Tougher Than the Rest," it moves into the lovely "All That Heaven Will Allow," boasting the hopeful excitement of new love. There's some rocking to be done ("Spare Parts") before the sad tale of Bill Orton on "Cautious Man." "Walk Like a Man" is beautiful, a heartfelt song to his father as he watches a wedding, with a wonderful melody to match. "Two Faces" is irresistible, an incredibly catchy yet touching song about uncertainty. The closers, "When You're Alone" and "Valentine's Day," might be those that best convey the awesome power of love.

"Tunnel of Love" is one of the most powerful, charming, and haunting records I've ever heard. It's brilliantly executed, with the heart-wrenching lyrics and soft, thoughtful music that makes it so hard to put down. "Tunnel of Love" can be challenging and even difficult, but it is a record in which the listener can really feel the soul of the man behind the music. I highly recommend this classic to all listeners.

5A MASTERPIECE  Feb 02, 2009
What an utterly amazing CD. I remember in 1987 hearing Brilliant Disguise and feeling the emotional raw talent that came from the single. The album and now CD are infused with such great songwriting and talent. Bruce Springsteen is an utter genius and is one of the most talented song writer sin our generation. The whole CD displays such an emotional and touching symbolism. Anyone who has ever been in love and has experienced heartbreak can relate to the raw emotions. One Step Up and Tunnel of Lover are sheer genius! Walk like a Man chronicles the insecurity of roles in marriage and the utter fear we all live with when we are married. This CD is a classic and will go down in history as an incredible work of art.

5This is it...  Nov 26, 2008
I was introduced to Bruce Springsteen by way of Born in the USA. My absolute first all time concert was Bruce in Lexington's Rupp Arena Dec. 1984. First and still the best concert I've ever attended. I then proceeded to catch up starting with Greetings From Asbury Park to Born in the USA and have been hooked ever since. If someone asked me to pick 1 single Bruce album to listen to I'd recommend Tunnel of Love. Bruce's music spans a lot of time and a lot of styles and genres. Still if I had to pick a favorite...start with this one then work your way backwards and forewards from Tunnel of Love.
