Description:

Before John Mellencamp recorded his classic Scarecrow, he learned hundreds of classic rock covers from the '60s. Here the Indiana troubadour ventures back to the very roots of American popular music, learning traditional songs associated with the likes of Robert Johnson, Son House, Howlin' Wolf, and Woody Guthrie. The result is Mellencamp's rawest album to date, updating the acoustic sounds of those early idioms for modern times while keeping them firmly rooted in tradition. In that sense, it's not unlike his hero Bob Dylan's two country-blues cover albums from the mid-'90s--though the ever-mischievous Mellencamp has a little fun with his definitions here, paying tribute to his Hoosier background by covering Bloomington native Hoagy Carmichael's "Brooklyn Oriole" and Lucinda Williams's 1980 ode to "Lafayette," while pulling a beautiful stark version of Skeeter Davis's wonderful 1963 country-pop ballad "End of the World" out of left field. The former James Brown impersonator has never sang better. The album closes with "To Washington," credited to Mellencamp, but actually a "borrowed blues" that's been used to address political figures as far back as Calvin Coolidge when recorded by Charlie Poole, the Carter Family, and Guthrie. This time, the song addresses one George W. Bush and surely won't gain Mellencamp any new fans among those who'd support a Dixie Chicks boycott. --Bill Holdship

5Mellencamp Masterpiece  May 27, 2008
John Cougar Mellencamp's album Trouble No More is simply a masterpiece of sound quality, execution and culturally authentic pieces. It is a little subtle, but it keeps growing on you like a good novel or vintage wine. Destined to live and be more appreciated as time goes on. A classic. The artist is ahead of his listeners in this one, which may account for some initially low first impression ratings. We have to make an effort to listen without prejudice to catch up to John's heart and his head. Mellencamp's art is in the nuances of his voice, the quality of the strings. Poetry, protest, philosophy, authentic life: it's all there.

4What An Artist...  Feb 07, 2008
This guy would have been a star in any decade. This is John hauling out a variety of old blues and 50's and 60's tunes and rollicking through them with typical Cougar fire. Hearing him dig deep into the blues catalog of Robert Johnson and Son House, then romping through folkster Woody Guthrie's "Johnny Hart" and then delivering the goods on Hoagy Carmichael's "Baltimore Oriole" - wow. And how many albums do YOU have that contrast songs like Skeeter Davis's "The End Of The World" with Willie Dixon's "Down In The Bottom" and Lucinda Williams' "Lafayette"? This is, in some ways, the most musically ambitious project of John's career, and as always, he delivers the goods.

5One of the Best - Rock, Folk, Blues... One of the Best  May 11, 2006
I am 52 years old and still love my Stones, Dylan, Clapton, Yardbirds, Dwight, and others. I am stumbled upon this album today and even on the first listen, I was blown away. Talk about a national treasure... and one that rocks.
