Best of the Best Oct 30, 2009 This is the best album I've heard in years! If you are a salsa dura fan, this is a must-have. The big band era is featured here with swinging arrangements with a dream team that best exemplifies this genre. The producer, Mario Ortiz Jr. makes a tribute to his father, the late Mario Ortiz, Puerto Rican band leader and arranger. Mario Ortiz Jr. takes his father's arrangements and kicks it up a notch! When you listen to "Malaguena" you will realize that this is a true Grammy contender. It is so much fun to listen to salsa greats such as Cheo Feliciano, Adalberto Santiago, Andy Montanez, Ismael Miranda, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz, and Gilberto Santa Rosa, just to name a few. This historical salsa album will surely be a favorite for years to come.
Best value salsa cd in years! Sep 27, 2009 I rarely write a review. But I had to on this cd. This is probably the best single cd I have purchased in years. It is a tribute to a former great trumpet player and bandleader, Mario Ortiz, by his son Mario Ortiz JR( himself a trumpet player) and an all-star cast of vocalists and musicians. It is a contemporary big band sound that is swinging from beginning to end. Outstanding tracks( which is nearly all of them) include El Soplo(Tito Allen), Se Acabo el Bembe( Ismael Miranda), Chinita (Gilberto Santa Rosa), Rumberito( Bobby Cruz and Roberto Roena), Yare Yare( Tony Vega and Pappo Lucca), Para los Bravos( Andy Montanez and co), A Quitarse ( Cheo Feliciano). The salsaton Mambo Infierno and Primi Cruz singing Que Bonito es Puerto Rico are very good too. If you get one salsa/rumba/mambo cd this year I think this is it. DJs should certainly consider adding this cd to their collection.
