Reconstructing ''Time'' Sep 20, 2009 I love ELO, I saw them on the "Time" tour in 1981 but it took
many years for me to really appreciate how good the album is.
(I was caught up in the 1977-era ELO)
When "Time" was re-released it was expanded with three bonus tracks
but sadly they were just tacked on to the end of the CD.
As this is my favorite ELO album, I decided to see if I could
place the three outtakes into the original album's sequence
and still maintain the feel and narrative established by
Jeff Lynne after the final mixdown in 1981.
The story in "Time" has a character that is both distinct and
delicate. It is obvious that Jeff Lynne put a lot of work into
this project and my goal was to imbed the outtakes so perfectly
that not even Jeff would notice the changes.
The first challenge was to support the original 1981 narrative.
The three outtakes were not included on the CD's enclosed lyric
sheet so I listened carefully to the words of each in order to
determine their eventual placement in the final sequencing.
It was important to maintain not only the integrity of the
story's Timeline (pun intended) but the overall flow of the
music as well. In some places the songs segued which further
limited my options.
There was but one small adjustment to make and that was just a
matter of inserting some dead air before an imbedded track. The
tempo changes and this calls for a rest in order to not startle
the listener.

I converted the CDA files to WAVs and stacked the files so that
all sixteen tracks would be a single track when burned to CD.
This was to eliminate that annoying interruption some CD players
have when playing back sequed songs.
One of ELO's best Jul 12, 2009 This has always been one of my favorite ELO albums. Because it is later in their catalog, often it is overlooked, but the whole concept album works on several levels. It's a time travel story, but with elements of lost love, technology overload, future shock, and lessons learned. I'm glad the remaster includes 3 bonus tracks that should have been on the album, they're good tunes and fit into the story (you have to find where they fit, I won't give it away).
Here is the news: buy this album!
ELO marches on Jul 03, 2009 'Time' is a concept album that tells a story. In that regard, it is like 'Eldorado'. The sound is futuristic is some respects, but it is designed to sound that way based on the story it is telling. It is synthesized, which bothers some ELO fans, but the songs are very good. Twilight being the big opener after the Prologue, is a great song. The song of the album without question. The rest of the album is innovative and interesting. Musically it is interesting as well. Catchy tunes and Jeff Lynne's fabulous voice. Give this album a chance. If you like ELO, you shouldn't be disappointed. Don't dissect it ... enjoy it. That is what it was made for. And all this tripe about this being one of their last 3 albums that was done quickly to satisfy contractual obligations I say. poppycock. Lynne composed the entire 2 record OUT OF THE BLUE album in 2 weeks. Like I said, don't dissect; enjoy ... it is a very good album.
Time revisited Jun 04, 2009 It was wonderful to hear this fantastic album again. I had Time on a copied cassette back in the early to mid 80's. It is even better to hear it on CD. An electronic sounding voice opens the album, then it burst into "Twighlight" which gives me goosebumps! ELO were on tour in the UK during the early 80's, performing this album and opened their show with a huge spaceship on stage. It was great to hear the album again and re-live those fabulous 80's.
The Lights Go DOwn May 30, 2009 "The Lights Go Down", for me, is the highlight of this fantastic album. The vocals and the music make this song one of Jeff's best. And then there's "Julie Don't Live Here" which I originally owned as the B side of one of the singles. "Julie" is drenched in the classic ELO sound. As I type this I'm reading all of ELO's reviews while listening to all my ELO Cd's. While some artists from the 70's seem dated I can honestly say that is not the case with ELO. Any of these ELO remastered discs with bonus material are well worth the money spent.
