"King of Pop" Too Late/Too Early Nov 09, 2009 I remember being in a record shop when `Thriller' arrived in the stores. Vinyl was taken for granted back then when rumors of C.D.'s with disks and lasers from Japan were filtering into our remote imaginations. I was going to buy another album. I can't even remember which one. What I do remember was seeing a poster for 'Thriller' on my way out, and thinking for the first time, by whim or intuition, of seriously buying a Michael Jackson album for the first time. Something told me I was witnessing an event, an opportunity to capture an instant classic. Something big and momentous was being heralded on my way out the door.
A short time later I was electrified to hear "Billie Jean" from the radio of a dorm stereo during my junior year of college. In one fell swoop, Michael Jackson not only proved that disco wasn't dead, he proved it didn't suck, either. It didn't take me long to assess the song as among the very best of the eighties. Actually, it turns out to be one of the best ever. Lingering throughout 1983, the songs from 'Thriller' could be heard from every stereo, every car radio, and significantly, from every TV set. MTV was at its zenith back then. It had debuted two years earlier redefining pop music as we know it. Putting in the craftsmanship, time, talent, (and, yes money) necessary, MJ redefined it again, elevating the stature of music videos from mediocre advertisements to full blown works of art.
Variety is a key component of every masterpiece, and with the able hand of producer Quincy Jones, Jackson blended the best of every category. He also tapped into talents from Van Halen to rock out on "Beat It," an infectious song with some great advice that only seems suitable from Jackson's pen and discerning ability to sort out a conflicted conscience. Soul and pop were expertly laid down with the reverberating energy of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" as well as the superbly sweet "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Human Nature". How can one forget the playful nuances, like the late Vincent Price's recitation in the middle-end of the title track?
`Thriller' was a showcase for a remarkably multi-talented musician and performer. His video work, dance routines, singing, choreography, and songwriting were all hallmark. There were other masterworks, too, such as 'Off the Wall,' but 'Thriller' single-handedly earned him the title "King of Pop".
Sadly, heavy wears the crown that such a king bore. It didn't surprise me that the entire summer of 2009 was devoted to him. Like Elvis (significantly, the king of rock) John Lennon, and Marvin Gaye before him, the King of Pop was taken away from us early--only to leave us to grieve once more for a sensational talent who brought us so much joy in such a short lifetime.
"The Album Is A Thriller Indeed" Nov 04, 2009 What more can be said about "Thriller"? It's a known fact that it is the best selling album of all time(it is hard to give an exact number as of yet but it's pretty high, some sources state up to 110 millions) and it's safe to say that with downloading now and the decrease of record sales in past years that it will never be equaled. By 1982 Michael Jackson was already an established artist by that point having released the successful "Off The Wall" in 1979, his first "real" solo album without his brothers and having performed for many years with his brothers as the Jackson 5 and later simply the Jacksons. Nothing could prepare him for the super stardom that would hit him with "Thriller". With this album Michael wanted to an album with no fillers and whether or not he planned it he accomplished much more than that.
There are plenty of great songs to be found here just take a look at the track listing; all great songs and nearly all of the album's songs were singles, 7 out of 9 not bad eh? "Wanna Be Startin' Sometin'" is a great opener, the title of this song says it all Michael wanted to start something big and with Thriller he did just that. "Baby be Mine" is a groovy kind of song, very good. "The Girl Is Mine" duet with Paul McCartney is a great collaboration between the two artists. The title track was a monster hit and it seems every Halloween it's all you hear, great song. "Beat It" is one of my personal favorites, a rocking track that features an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo. Then there is of course the unforgettable "Billie Jean", it's hard to believe that producer Quincy Jones initially wanted the long introduction removed. "Human Nature" is another song I really like showcasing a softer side of Michael. "P.Y.T (Pretty Young thing)" and "The Lady In My Life" are not to be forgotten, they're also great songs.
With "Thriller" Michael would not only change the music itself as he pretty much turned by himself the music video from a promotional tool to an art form as has been said. The videos for Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean are still remembered today and had a tremendous impact. The contribution this album made to music are certainly important, many artists of today have been influenced by him for this album especially. He would never release an album quite like Thriller again, don't get me wrong I love all his albums but this is the kind of a album can usually only happen once in a career. This album is essential, there is no other way of putting its a must have. 5 stars and I would give it much higher if I could. By the way you might want to check out the 25th Anniversary edition it has an unreleased track "For All Time", some remixes by today's artists and a DVD with the videos for Thriller, Beat It and Billie Jean and his legendary Motown 25th anniversary performance.
Michael Focuses on Developing His Entertainer Side Nov 03, 2009 After musical achievement and commercial success of Off the Wall, Michael Jackson seems to start focusing on developing his entertainer side. The first track from his second solo album Thriller, "Wanna be Startin' Somethin'," is a polished presentation of his genuine talent in vocal/percussion arrangement with a Latin taste, developed from Off the Wall. The rest of the album is more entertaining, consisting of more narrative songs (i.e., "The Girl is Mine," "Thriller," and "Billie Jean"), whose Quincy-produced tracks are, sometimes decorated with sound effects, more synthesized. Guest appearances of Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen even make the album more appealing to a wide range of popular music fans. Along with these factors combined, the sequence of mega-hits just sounds overwhelmingly nostalgic to the audience who has experienced the 80s.
great music! Oct 19, 2009 I love the album! My only gripe is in the delivery of it. The casing was cracked on one side so the packaging could've been better. All the songs were great; I liked all of them. I especially liked the fact that there were extra tracks on the album. Who would ever think that Vincent Price would say "Can you dig it". Brings back some good memories. Upon hearing this album, you can see why it's considered the greatest album of all time. Michael's passing is so sad. I'm still in shock almost 4 months later. His music will never die; he will truly be missed and always loved.
Thriller is the ultimate Michael Jackson album! Oct 18, 2009 Thriller was a BIG deal when it first come out, mainly due to the wonderfully choreographed video of the same name. Thriller quickly went on to become the world's best selling album, and, if you actually sit and listen to it, and actually appreciate what you're listening to, then you'll fully and completely understand why this has grown to become the world's best selling album.

Now for my personal favorites on the album. While there's not a bad song on this album, my personal favorites include Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Thriller (DUH!), Billie Jean (DUH!), and Beat It (DUH!). While every single song on here has something to offer someone, those four songs there alone are enough to want to own a copy of the world's best selling album.
Trust me, any die-hard Michael Jackson fan will tell you that this album is the be all and end all for his albums. They don't get much better than this at all.
