Strikes at the Core of Humanity Oct 27, 2009 When The Things They Carried was chosen as my book club's 2009 Big Read selection, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I'm too young to remember the Vietnam War. In fact, I am of a generation who has never really experienced "genuine" war. Furthermore, none of my immediate family members ever engaged in active combat. In a word, I feared I'd find nothing to relate to within this book's pages. I needn't have worried. My experience in reading The Things They Carried was nothing short of extraordinary. For all my lack of firsthand connection to warfare, I've seen more than my fair share of personal strife. It's from that viewpoint (reading this book from the point of view of my own personal wars) that I was drawn in and bound tightly to its riveting story lines. Whatever your own personal historical perspective, you'll find The Things They Carried utterly relatable on the basis of its uncanny ability to strike at the core of what it means to be human.
A petition for "A Soldier's Sweetheart" (1998) to be released on general DVD... Oct 22, 2009 I have created a petition in recognition of this TV Movie 'A Soldier's Sweetheart' (1998) - for the possibility of a DVD Release.
The film is based on the short story "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" and included in the Pulitzer Prize finalist book `The Things They Carried' by Tim O'Brien. The book is widely regarded as the most significant work of fiction to come out of the Vietnam War. The source material for this film, 'The Things They Carried', is now required reading in many college level literature courses. This is a fine film adaptation of what is becoming a classic series of short stories.

On "The Things They Carried" Oct 22, 2009 A friend told me about this book. I heard it is "the definative Viet Nam Book".It is nothing less. O'Brien's prose and honesty yield a heady mix of philosophy and realism, palpable doubt and courage. For me, at least, a piquant memory of the times and emotions (I did not serve, but was of age). If you want some understanding of the Viet Nam War, don't miss it.
an all around great read Oct 12, 2009 This was a great book to read. I was given an assignment from my college professor to read this book. I began reading this book as any other person would, thinking it was going to be a dry boring college book. WRONG! I was consumed...It was a book that flowed like water. It was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a book that talks of war, and emotions. It was a book that really captured my attention from the beginning all the way to the end. I hope that if you do read this book, you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Enter the minds of men Sep 26, 2009 Mr. O'Brien's work was an eye-opener for me. I'm not a guy, and certainly not a soldier. I've never been to Viet Nam. Yet, I enjoyed reading this book on so many levels, not because I liked the subject matter--in places it was beyond gross-- but because it gave me such an insight into the minds of men. This is hopefully the closest I will get to experiencing a war, and I'm grateful to Mr. O'Brien for taking me into it as closely as he did. I will never look at soldiers--or average guys, for that matter--the same way again.
