Proving once again... Sep 29, 2009 Take 6's The Standard once again proves the axiom you can take any standard tune, and with expert, inspired arrangement and performance create something spectacular and fresh. Melody is a stack of lumber: you can build out of it a shack or amass more and build a palace. So many times have I read title listings on a CD of old standards with an prejudiced sigh, but find that if they're masterfully, courageously overhauled, experience musical euphoria! If you're a "chord lover," Take 6 is your band. Without breaking down a review of each tune, The Standard is, to me, is "palatial," and satisfies my repeat-listening appetite for dense harmonies and hairpin rhythms! An instant favorite!
doxies4me Aug 13, 2009 I love this CD. It is one of my favorites. The dynamics of the voices are incredible. This CD is a real treat.
Take 6 Takes On The Classics Jul 05, 2009 Take 6, the jazz-gospel sextet with the airy harmonic sound, has come up with their soulful take on the jazz classics that could sure to make even Renee Olstead blush. "The Standard" contains such classics as "Sweet Georgia Brown", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", and even a soulful take on the Gershwin classic "Someone To Watch Over Me". Their airy harmonies give new insight to these standards, while maintaining their soulful bent. Indeed, this is one of the best albums Take 6 has released in recent years.

Spread Love Apr 02, 2009 Cats in the know going nuts over this one. Another step forward in their life's work to SPREAD LOVE. Certainly their best collaborative effort, they got all the best people, the legends, even reaching up to heaven for Ella! Vocalese masters Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau. This would have been Gene Puerling's desert island album I betcha. Then, Aaron Neville, Brian McKnight. They are of course legends themselves ... Alvin Chea is moving jazz bass continuo ahead just on his own. This is a headphone album, rewards multiple listens. Engineering on this ought to win a Grammy just by itself.
A Secular Smash Mar 24, 2009 Take 6 has its roots as a Gospel group -- a mighty fine Gospel group. So, it came as no surprise to me that the first two CDs I ever purchased of theirs were their Holiday offerings (both highly recommended, BTW).
This time around, they turn their attention to more secular pursuits, a collection of standards, that allows them to utilize their unbelievable harmonies on songs that are not are not of a religious nature. They do a tremendous job on both the accompanied and acapella selections. My only complaint is that they brought in a couple of guest artists, that they didn't need to. They don't need to be anybody's back-up singers.
I highly recommend this CD, especially to lovers of vocal harmony groups like Boyz II Men or Manhattan Transfer.
