 Strong start, but... Nov 27, 2008
"Stand Up and Be Strong" is a really good pop song. I also liked the next three tracks, "Lately," "Crazy Mixed Up World," and All is Well." However, the rest of the disc was pretty weak, with several songs actually being tough to listen to all the way through.

What can I say, I was pleasently surprised when I heard this CD. Definately work the buy and I of course I am a Clerks fan so it always makes me happy when their songs are in the movies. Great buy all around; I like it a lot!

"Say Hello to the Underground, Say Hello for Me"
Soul Asylum's brand new Studio album since 1998's `Candy from a Stranger'. The band re-emerges & brings to its fans `The Silver Lining' which is not the hard core material a fan may expect but I am pleased to see that the band has evolved for the better.
The new album has a modern pop rock edge to it. It certainly is driven with Guitars as David Pirner states. The album is also one in which we see the departure of bassist Karl Mueller who struggled with Cancer but contributed on the record until the very end.
Soul Asylum, I am sure will sell out their tour dates upon announcement & they certainly in their new evolved sound are just as edgy & rock driven. This is proved by the following tracks:
*Stand Up & Be Strong (Excellent Lead Single), *Listen, *Crazy Mixed Up World, and
*The Great Exaggerator.
The real highlights include:
*Watcha Need, *Standing Water, *Success Is Not So Sweet, and the hidden track *Fearless Leader which should have been an album track & not a hidden track but it's a treat none the less!
Whilst the new album may be filled with more structured rock pop songs with catchy infectious choruses that you can feel are coming from miles away, I am pleased that Soul Asylum continued & soldiered on showcasing their dedication to music. As with so many of towards so called artists - we'd be lucky if they gave us more than 1 record.
After their album `Let Your Dim Light Shine', `The Silver Lining' would have been a better follow up than `Candy from a Stranger'. But a good come back it certainly is.
Thank you Soul Asylum for putting out an album that I can enjoy from start to finish.
P.s. Any tour dates penned in for Auckland, New Zealand??

This group is one I've always enjoyed and one I have truly missed what with their recent absence from the rock scene. Their past work has been excellent, especially "Runaway train", which I can never hear too often. David Pirner has not lost his touch, as the lyrics and music on "The Silver Lining" are vintage Pirner. The band is extremely strong too, and I pass my condolences on to them for their loss of Karl Mueller. "Stand Up and Be Strong" is the group doing just that; producing a surefire smash hit on the way. "Lately", "Crazy Mixed Up World" "All is Well" are also very good tunes that measure up to the past work of the group. I also really liked "Watcha Need", "Success is not so Sweet" and "The Great Exaggerator." Please don't miss the hidden pearl on the cd; at the end of track 12 "Slowly Rising" is a another acoustic gem that is a political satire, scathing and unrepentant. This is really a fine cd and I highly recommend it for any Asylum fan or anybody interested in entering the "Asylum." Good to have you back, fellas.

 Great band- dull songs Jan 18, 2007
This being their first CD in many years, they sound very strong, very together, & very well produced with a live feel & very little overdubbing. The guitars are effectively jangly & distorted and bass & drums are mixed well. Pirner's vocals sound stronger than ever and the lyrics are well written as usual. Sounds like a solid rockin' good time doesn't it? Unfortunately most of this CD consists of ballads with very generic, conventional song structures with big choruses you can feel coming a mile away. But I'm not totally displeased with this and It's a welcome return after a long wait. The best tracks IMO are "Lately" which contains some poignant lyrics about a soldier's guilt trip for what he was made to do during the war, and how strong family ties can help relieve the guilt, "Bus Named Desire" a fairly good rocker, "Success Is Not So Sweet", and "Slowly Rising" a good rocker with slightly dumb lyrics. Not an awful CD but "Hang Time" is still their best- by a long shot.
