Description:

1989's Sensual World remains Kate Bush's most mature, entrancing album. Expectations ran high for the long-awaited follow-up to her 1986 breakthrough The Hounds of Love, and she met them with this sometimes breathtaking, often introspective work. On songs like the erotic title track and the dramatic "Love and Anger," Bush charts the many rhythms of relationships with a keen eye for detail and less frilly bluster than usual. Elsewhere, with the tense "Between a Man and a Woman" and the lush "This Woman's Work" she virtually lays the foundation for Tori Amos's future success. Musically, Bush broadens her palette with the smart additions of Irish piper Davey Spillane, Balkan singers The Trio Bulgarka, and jazz bassist Eberhard Weber. --Michael Ruby

5Sensual is just about right  Nov 13, 2008
I first listened to this as a pre-adolescent in 1989. Now, listening to it again, it's hard not to wonder why anyone thought Madonna was shocking. This is an album by someone who has experienced the depths of rapture, pain, sex, indignation, compassion, and deliverance... For some reason, the Madonna comparison kept occurring to me since a few years later Madonna released 'Erotica'. When I compare the two artists, Madonna comes off as someone who's clueless about sex, who only perceives a kind of 80s-porno idea about sex...(never mind the fact that she doesn't play instruments and almost always co-writes with people whose talents exceed her own) Madonna's message about sex is that it's cold, hard, indifferent, loveless, jaded, bored, blasé and mechanical.

Kate, however, creates music and songs that elevate sexuality, romance, politics, and emotion to an altogether higher, more literate, more mystical, and more poetic level. Madonna is just a Belinda Carlisle who got lucky. This really is one of Kate's sexiest and loveliest recordings. While, as of 2007/8, Madonna is hanging with Timberlake (who really needs to get to an OA twelve-step meeting as quickly as possible if the distended, incipient curve of his belly is anything to go by), and trying to be Mia Farrow (and God knows why anyone sane would want to do that), Kate continues to transcend the trappings and idiocies of celebrity. Meanwhile, we poor souls are constantly subjected to the white-trash daughters of Madonna (Britney, Christina, Sheryl Crow etc), whose lives would be more appropriately spent holding cans of Paps Blue Ribbon and beating their children.

The name sums up this album " The Sensual World".... enough said!

Although not instantly likeable, this is a very beautiful, mature complex, layered, SENSUAL and sometimes dark album.

I think this is one of those albums that requires several listens and perhaps a good bottle of wine--sitting alone in your room--to fully grasp this album!

5Home again  Mar 25, 2008
Close to two decades a friend introduced my to Kate Bush via Hounds of love. I love the tracks on the album, yet when the same friend played some of her other works I was not as impressed and so Hounds became my one and only Kate Bush.

Then recently reading some information on her I came across some reviews of the Sensual World and I listened to the tracks and it was like it picked up right where Hounds of Love ended.

Listening to her wonderful voice combined with the layered melodies and insightful lyrics sends a shiver down my spine and electricty to shoot over my skin.

A masterpiece and not to be missed.

Close your eyes, listen and immerse yourself in aural triumph.

2only for the hardcare fans!  Mar 11, 2008
Every song on the Dreaming was utterly awesome. She peaked with that album, and it went downhill from there. Hounds of Love was half brilliant and this one has 3 songs I really like (the title track, "Never Be Mine", "This Woman's Work"). Aside frome these, the album ranges from uncompelling to downright lame. If this is her most "mature," as others have argued, its her least interesting.
