4Good Remix collection for new fans, but it could have been better  Feb 27, 2008
This a good compilation for new fans who have not followed closely Mariah's career during her Columbia years (1990-2000) and 2001-2002 era. But for the ones who already own the Singles that contain most of the mixes presented in this collection, there is no much to be crazy about, except for the convenience of finding your favorite Remixes in one place. This "Remixes" CD Set is actually half Remixes and half Mariah featuring other artists (which is very common on her post-Columbia releases).

CD #1 contains the most drastic reinterpretations, it is an all-house/dance compilation of remixed hits in super extended form (except the last track - a Radio Edit). My Favorite Remixes are the ones done by the great David Morales and the defunct C&C Music Factory DJ-duo. It would have been nice to include some alternate versions that are harder to find or unpublished/promotional Remixes such "Underneath The Stars" - Drifting Remix (although this is more R&B), and Remixes of other Singles such "Make It Happen", "Someday" and "There's Got To Be A Way".

CD #2 contains mostly R&B/hip-hop versions that are less drastic, starting with the first noticeable R&B/hip-hop attempt by Mariah featuring the late O.D.B. It does not make much sense that 4 Album tracks were included here since this is a "Remix" collection. Remixes that were done for "Breakdown" as well as "Sweetheart" should have been included instead. "Cry Baby" and "Miss You" were not remixed as far as I know. Also, "Hearbreaker" and "Loverboy" can be considered Album tracks because they were included in the "Rainbow" and "Glitter" albums and not as a "bonuses".
"I Know What You Want" is kind of a bonus because it is a track by Busta Rhymes feat. Mariah as a guest, but it is not a "Remix" (and it is not available in Remix form I think).

Something that is worth mentioning is that unlike other singers, Mariah actually re-recorded vocals and added new lyrics for many of her Remixes. That's why they sound great, it was not just a song with different background music and tempo.

I am giving 3 stars to the release as a package, not to the music itself. Since Mariah is not part of Columbia anymore I do not think that she has control over what gets released. So I really do not consider this a "Mariah" release.

4The Queen of Remixes  Oct 06, 2007
Since the emancipation proclamation that was the album, Butterfly, Mariah has made it crystal-clear in interviews that before that time, her record label had restricted her creative boundaries and created a certain "turtle neck" image she was to pertain to. During this period, she did manage to slip some other influences into her music here and there, but overall it was very polished, adult-contemporary vocal pop. Remixes, however, really gave her an opportunity to explore different genres and territories that weren't allowed to be touched on her major album releases. This two-disc set surveys her highlight re-inventions of some of her most successful (and also more obscure) singles.

Disc one is packed with nine of her best club/dance remixes. All of the tracks (excluding "Through The Rain") have re-recorded vocals from the artist. New melodies, new lyrics and altogether new sections are added to the original. As said before, these remixes allow her to go in unmarked territory, such as gospel and even a little jazz; each remix has powerful, gospel-influenced backup vocalists and Mariah actually scats on "Anytime You Need A Friend." Two remixes, one of them being "Emotions," begin with only her singing with a piano, and then the beat suddenly picks up out of nowhere. These are not your ordinary house mixes; they are climactic, creative, artistic and do not follow the cut-and-paste vocal technique that is lazily used by most.

The second disc collects her famous hip-hop remixes, with popular collaborators, Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat, among others. As with the first disc, these remixes really put a new spin on the singles; some could be a completely seperate songs altogether. She re-records and re-writes on these also, avoiding the annoying trend of today where a rapper it added to the original song and it's called a "remix." This disc, however, is very flawed. Almost half of these songs are not remixes at all! They are album tracks ("Crybaby," "Breakdown," "Sweetheart," etc.) that could be easily attained by even the most casual fan. These slots, which were carelessly wasted, could've been used for some of her other genious hip-hop/R&B remixes that were not included here. However, the second disc still is quality and even provides one or two gems that even the most dedicated fan may not have.

Any person who thought Mariah was one-dimensional... well think again. Overall, although this has some flaws, it is an amazing collection of club and hip-hop/R&B mixes from an artist who really put a lot of effort and control into making them. They really show just how creative and talented Carey is. Highly recommended to anyone, especially if you enjoy her music.
