Description:

Building on the sound they forged on 'A Blessing In Disguise', Green Carnation's fourth album, 'The Quiet Offspring', sees them expanding on both of their strong points: ultra-catchy straightforward metallic rock songs (the kind Metallica should be writing!) and spacious, melodic prog-metal tunes that are epic and beautiful. Another fine piece of work from one of Norway's leading bands in the progressive metal field. Green Carnation - The Quiet Offspring "The musical world is blessed to receive the gifts bestowed by Norway's most ambitious rock band, Green Carnation" - 9.5/10 (Terrorizer)

5Hooked from the first song  May 06, 2009
I have been listening to rock for a long time. The first song: "The Quiet Offspring" is one of my all time favorites. The driving rhythm/beat and the melody is incredible. Give it a listen and see if you don't agree. I bought the cd immediately after listening to that song. I was very pleased with the rest of the songs.

4Not essential, but very enjoyable atmospheric metal..  May 21, 2006
Green Carnation has returned with their 4th full-length album. After 3 very differing albums, it seems these Norwegians have decided to stick to a particular sound for once, with "The Quiet Offspring" really being a continuation of 2003s "A Blessing in Disguise". For me, that's a little disappointing, mainly due to the fact that I much prefer where the band was during the "Light of Day, Day of Darkness" period. That's not to say that this isn't a good album, it's just a matter of taste.

I must admit though, the first few listens really didn't do too much for me at all. It sounded a little too rocky and lacking in creative spark to capture my attention. I was fully prepared to write a damning review a couple of weeks ago, but just when I was ready to start typing, I found myself humming along quite happily to the album and thoroughly enjoying it. I guess it also helps that I've reviewed some fairly average albums recently, and when compared, this is tight, musically proficient and full of catchy melodies.

"The Quiet Offspring" takes quite some time to grow on you, so I suggest interested listeners give it quite a few spins before making any judgements about its quality. Even so, there's nothing groundbreaking here, so I do wonder how long these very talented musicians will be content releasing this type of melancholic rock. I'm pretty certain I'll be using this mainly as background music when my "scared of anything metal" mates come over to my house. In fact, I'm quite sure they'll think it's rather good, which is not something that occurs very often with many of my albums.

Anyone into progressive rock or just solid, quality, genuine music will probably enjoy this album for what it is, even if it will most likely not come to mind when putting together that top 10 list at the end of the year. Enjoyable, if not entirely essential.

4The Everlasting Moment is A Place for Me  Mar 08, 2006
GREEN CARNATION - The Quiet Offspring
-
From the powerful title track opener you know instantly that Green Carnation has once again surpassed the expectations of their fans and their critics. These guys have really done for Mainstream Rock what Opeth, has done for Death Metal. Though both artists sound quite different their likeness lies within there willingness to explore the progressive limits of their genre and not explore them but push the limits. I really do not see how any person with any type of knowledge or respect of music could dismiss this album as anything but genius.

Not only can these guys create great rock and roll... they can also explore some more passionate mellow moments such as the beautiful, `A Place for Me' or the amazing `Childs Play Part I' What's really great about this album is that every song is varied in sound, yet it cohesively flows... Each one of the eleven tracks is worth comment but I do not have the time or the need to go into further details...
All you need to know is,
Green Carnation has created another essential hard rock album... fans of Progressive Rock, 90's Rock, Classic Rock/Metal, or pretty much any other form of Rock & Roll should check this out.

Favorite Tracks: Dead or Dreaming, The Quiet Offspring, Childs Play Part I, and Purple Door, Pitch Black.

4Atmospheric , progressive , rock metal band with new different stuff on it!  Sep 11, 2005
I got into Green carnation by mistake . i heard about them and decide to buy " light of day ,day of darkness" after listening to the first min`` of it , i thought to my self- this is for me! This is a realy rare and masterpiece 60 min` album!
I recognized that i was listening to a very talent band. i bought also their dvd " Alive abd well ...in krakow" and their last 2 albums . The last album i bought " the The quiet offspring " is much different from rheir first albums and it is much a " band " album. The group changed their music style with every new album and they grabed my attention by the very first listening to them.
the changed keeps us intersted but i sure " tchort " prefered that their fifth album will be much like their first album and he even said " i have written some new material which is more doom like our first album combined with " light of day , day of darkness" so there will be change in our next album but a change back to the roots, but it is also depends on the other members of the band.....". there is a big different in the band because they do have more people writing the songs and there is 6 members writing the whole album and in many tracks there is one individual band - member who was writing the whole song.
it seems " tchort " prefered more melancholic stuff because he likes melancolic music but " the quiet offspring" was writen most of it by the other members as the bassist stein roger sordal who has written most of the albums lyrics , the second track which was written and both lyrics and music by him and even track has written by the new guitar player michael who wrote and even became one of the permanent member .
it seems that " tchort " has written so little in this album because he choose to get a part with two other black metal`s groups such as " Carpathian forest " and with "Blood red throne" So he wrote his song " childsplay part 1 , Dead but dreaming" and was responsible to the last track " childsplay part 2"
. he asked his keyboard player to made a cover version of " childsplay part 1" and for him this is the most dramatic songs that they have ever done. GREEN CARNATION Delivered four albums to date with good quality, but in the last album the band started to branch out with ideas of everyone in band so it got different sound , "tchort " told us in one of his interview that " it`s no secret that he (stein roger) is a great fan of 80s pop aces A-ha, amongs others , he also a great fan of black sabbath and stuff like that..." and add that his song " purple door, pitch black" is "maybe the song in which he sums up all his big influences". I didnt put the new album to much to add more on it but i think as always that changing the atmospher of each album is not bad at all but downt forget why?
"tchort " changed his self`s atmospher and his inspiration not anly because the band`s members, also because in one album he lost his dauther and in the other ( day of light...) his new sun was norn and in the kast album his mind was maybe most of the time in the other two bands he had....so now the next album will depend on the other band members or on the producer as hapend in this album ( terje`s apprproach and they decide to go with Terje who produce it).
GREEN CARNATION IS ATMOSPHERIC, PROGRESSIVE , ROCK, METAL BAND WITH GOOD ALBUMS THAT HAVE GOOD QUALITY IN THEM!!!!

4Green Carnation-The Quiet Offspring  Jul 23, 2005
Green Carnation is a band that holds a special place in my heart. "Light of Day, Day of Darkness" is one of the most brilliant musical releases I have ever heard, a pure work of genius. Two albums later, we have "The Quiet Offspring," an excercise in some of Green Carnation's other talents.

It is immediately clear that this is an even more stripped down version of Green Carnation than on "Blessing in Disguise." The simplicity of the title track and "Between the Gentle Small and Standing Tall" (among others) demonstrate a more commercial sound. This does not hinder the album whatsoever as you can tell that Tchort and Co. spent time on the songs and put some feeling behind the album. My favorite part of this album is not any individual playing, but the Pink Floyd-ish atmospheres. The last two Green Carnation albums utilized organs and pianos and, at least from my perspective, gives the album considerable Floyd influence (which isn't so surprising considering a majority of the band members were a part of In the Woods...). If I had to pick out my favorite individual performance, I'd probably go with vocalist Kjetil Nordhus. His singing has improved and he puts forth an excellent performance. Pick any song on the record and it is garunteed that the singing is well done.

The problem I have with this record is its simplicity. I'm not asking for another "Light of Day..." but for a band with this kind of talent and the ideas I know they're capable of making, "The Quiet Offspring" just hits me a little flat. I know I have it ranked as four stars but I'm leaning more towards 3 and a half. This isn't the record I hoped they would make but it is well executed, most definitely honest (anyone remotely familiar with Green Carnation knows all about the child concept and why) and overall an enjoyable listen.

Fans of "A Blessing in Disguise" will probably enoy this while fans of "Light of Day..." may have a little trouble swallowing this one. This is not their best work but is by no means a bad record. There are rumors of a sequel to "Light of Day..." but while the fans wait for it, this one should tide them over just fine.
