Description:

Ken Follett is known worldwide as the master of split-second suspense, but his most beloved and bestselling book tells the magnificent tale of a twelfth-century monk driven to do the seemingly impossible: build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has ever known.

Everything readers expect from Follett is here: intrigue, fast-paced action, and passionate romance. But what makes The Pillars of the Earth extraordinary is the time—the twelfth century; the place—feudal England; and the subject—the building of a glorious cathedral. Follett has re-created the crude, flamboyant England of the Middle Ages in every detail. The vast forests, the walled towns, the castles, and the monasteries become a familiar landscape. Against this richly imagined and intricately interwoven backdrop, filled with the ravages of war and the rhythms of daily life, the master storyteller draws the reader irresistibly into the intertwined lives of his characters—into their dreams, their labors, and their loves: Tom, the master builder; Aliena, the ravishingly beautiful noblewoman; Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge; Jack, the artist in stone; and Ellen, the woman of the forest who casts a terrifying curse. From humble stonemason to imperious monarch, each character is brought vividly to life.

The building of the cathedral, with the almost eerie artistry of the unschooled stonemasons, is the center of the drama. Around the site of the construction, Follett weaves a story of betrayal, revenge, and love, which begins with the public hanging of an innocent man and ends with the humiliation of a king.

At once a sensuous and endearing love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age, The Pillars of the Earth is without a doubt Ken Follett's masterpiece.

5Pillars of the earth  Nov 14, 2009
First off, for a used book, it was in excellent condition. The author had me captured within the first couple of pages. The way he builds a story around each character is amazing. There is detail where you get a first hand experience how it would have felt living during those times

5AMAZING!!  Nov 06, 2009
Could not put this wonderful piece of literature down!!
Follet did a wonderful job of creating a story that never lets-up and continually throws the reader a curve-ball.
Packed full of emotions and wonderful character development I would highly recommend this book!

5Enjoyed -  Nov 02, 2009
I am not a big novel kind-of-guy. I picked this book up principally to add color to a subject that I was reading about at the time - the history of the middle ages and the history of the Catholic church. I have to say that I enjoyed the book immensely because it seemed consitant with how it was in the 15th century. Ken Follett tells a nice story with a lot of historical accuracy... He multi layered the fictional characters within the framework of historical facts. While I don't see this book at a pure historical novel it has that feel to it.

This was my first Follett novel. And, while I am not a historian, the storyline bumped up nicely with how people lived their lives in a world of an all powerful church and self serving political structures. Nice book and enjoyed it very much.

5LOVE IT  Nov 02, 2009
I read this book a few months ago and also the sequel. It is hands down one of THE BEST BOOKS i have ever read! It takes in you from page one and stays with you way after you finish the book. the characters are rich and come to life, makes you feel like you are right there with them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a trip back in time and get lost.
