Well, at least he's releasing the right songs Sep 02, 2005
I have to say that I'm surprised by how much popularity Frankie J has been getting. And I say this because I think I'm the only person that bought his first album, What's a Man to Do. Anyway, the problem I had with that album was that other than the hit single ("Don't Wanna Try"), the album really had nothing else to offer. And with this album, The One, it's the same situation.
Before I go any further, I'd also like to say that I'm surprised by all the people comparing Frankie to Usher. Maybe it's because people keep saying that his latest single "How to Deal" sounds like Usher's "Burn", but at any rate, that autobiographical song is one of the album's standouts. The same can be said about "Obsession (No Es Amor)" (except for Baby Bash's verse, but he's always wack anyway). The only tracks that stand out other than the singles are the last two regular tracks, "In the Moment" and "Gone".
Like what happened on his first album, when Frankie tries to make joints for the club, he falls flat, as evidenced by the average title track (with 3LW) and the corny "#1 Fan". And although "On the Floor" features a clever sample of Wham's "Everything She Wants", the song still can't be saved (probably also due to Paul Wall's okay verse).
Another thing that gets me is the use of bonus tracks. Usually bonus tracks are either hard-to-find songs or songs that are only on soundtracks, but, well, it's fine to have a Spanish version of "Obsession", but "Suga Suga" was already on Baby Bash's first album. And "Don't Wanna Try" was already on Frankie's first album, so why is that even here? Basically, Frankie J needs to either stick to ballads or get some better writers, because this album really ain't the one.
