Description:

Bootsy’s last solo album for Warner Brothers didn’t make much of a mark commercially, as the R&B audience turned more and more to slick dance-pop and drum machines. But it’s still Bootsy, who is, as one track on the album puts it, the ''#1 Funkateer!'' The complete 1982 release!

5What Can I Say???...  Nov 14, 2008
I first bought this album in 1982.
I was 22 years old at the time, and a huge music fan. My musical tastes
ranged from rock to classical to pop and I was a big fan of ...
Parliament!
Bootsy was the bass player for the group and I immediately became a fan.
"Stretching Out In A Rubberband" was played til the grooves fell off.
When "The One Giveth..." came out I was very excited. After one play, I became an even bigger fan of the guy. "Land shark", "Countrackula", "Excon"...all classics.
The album didn't get much play at the time, and I never understood it. It should rank along side Bootsy's best.

3Ahh The Songs are shorter but they are still FUNKY  Mar 22, 2008
I was a bit shocked when I started listening to this album. After being used to hearing LONG FUNK CLASSICS from BOOTSY, these jams were much shorter! "Shine-O-Mite" started this set of FUNK DIDDIES but "Countracula through me off especially when I found out that "BODY SLAM" should have been the choice to be included here. Think about it!! If "BODY SLAM" had been put on this album instead of "Countracula" (which BODY SLAM was based on anyway) would that have made this albums sales SLAMMING????? Wouldn't have BOOTSY have gotten a NEW RECORD DEAL and not have to WAIT 6 YEARS TO REEMERGE??? "#1 Funkateer" was my favorite song here but "Take A Lickin & Keep On Tickin" put a RUMP IN YOUR BUMP! And "Excon Of Love" takes ya back big time! Since I have reviewed this album before, I don't want to talk about what may have been wrong but what is really RIGHT and that is that I am more then proud that most of this great album appeared on BOOTSY'S ANTHOLOGY "DA FUNKS ON ME" and rightfully so and REMEMBER DA PWCMUSICNETWORK is not partial to anyone!! I JUST TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....................

4(3.5 stars) You'd be surprised at how good this is  Nov 26, 2007
You know, I was really afraid of this record before I heard it. For one, the title is totally ridiculous, and not "funny-ridiculous", either, just "stupid-ridiculous". Same goes for the cover. For another, this is supposed to be Bootsy's worst album; for a third, the shorter running times made me think that Bootsy had sold out; for a fourth, the first four songs begin with ludicrous spoken introductions. For a fifth, two of them suck: "Shine-O-Myte" was probably phoned in by Bootsy when he was feeling neither funky nor friendly (Go buy the first record if you don't get that!), and "Countracula" doesn't get any better from its awful introduction. But when I actually listened to it, I discovered it really wasn't all that bad! A ton better than Boot, which had like a good song and a half on it. As an axis of the Clinton/Collins/Worrell songwriting team, Bootsy had always been more groovesmith than tunesmith. But Bootsy's a flexible guy (he's in a rubber band, after all), and he shows us he can make things work in a more confined format, too - witness the electrofunk "#1 Funkateer"; the high-octane horn-fueled "So Nice You Name Him Twice", and the funny "Landshark", with a powerful, propulsive groove. The best song to me is the weird ballad "Excon (of Love)", which besides having an awesome title again has all kinds of Bootsy's odd persona, which otherwise doesn't really show up much here - you think that's why he constantly drops his own name? I do. Yes, it's a sellout, and it has some really poor songs ("What's W-R-O-N-G Radio" is a rewrite of "Standing on the Verge of Getting it On"); "Music to Smile By" and "Play on Playboy" are little more than titles to me, if you get where I'm going. But there are four pretty solid songs here, so I gotta give this one a solid thumbs-up. Better than What's Bootsy Doin', that's for sure!

4Takes A Lickin' And Keeps On Tickin'  Oct 10, 2006
I never thought this album got the props it deserved. One of Bootsy's funkiest !!! From "Shyne O Myte" to "The Funky Functioneer" every track is P-Funk, Un-Cut Funk....DA BOMB !!! Bootsy was way ahead of his time. The things this cat can do with a bass. I remember buying this album back in 1982 when it was released and off and on I've been playing it ever since. Eventhough I bought the cd, ain't nothing like watching that vinyl go round and round and listening to Casper's voice exploed thru those Cerwin Vegas in the crib. "Excon of Love" is the joint ! All of Booty's slow jams were. Just didn't get the credit they deserved. If you have this one...you are of the funk - if you don't have it....GET IT...and become one with the funk.
