Description:

Few can coo a love song as convincingly as Monica, but The Makings of Me confirms what many have suspected since the ATL-based firebrand lit up the charts with Brandy in 1998: it's when she's digging through the wreckage of a busted-up relationship that she dishes up her best work. Makings, luckily, is littered with liars, cheats, and assorted degenerates--when Monica's not wagging her finger in the face of a "Sideline Ho" ("Ain't you tired of spending all the holidays alone?" she wants to know), she's dismissing the fiancé who dissed her with a brisk, silk-voiced "Hell No." Appealing brassiness aside, Makings benefits from excellent production (Missy Elliot slinks up "Gotta Move On" with Far East flavor and lets flecks of Curtis Mayfield fly on "A Dozen Roses") and a handful of hip-hop luminaries. While the Twista-boasting "Hell No" gives off heat courtesy of the sheer speed of its rap exchange, it's Dem Franchize Boys who rule this particular guest list: The Jermaine Dupri-produced "Everytime Tha Beat Drop" doesn't play--it demands a dance floor. Instantly. Every time. --Tammy La Gorce

5Where are tracks 11, 12, 13, and/or 14 Monica?!  Sep 28, 2009
Monica has been one of my favorite solo female artists since we were first introduced to her in 1995 with chart-topping "Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)". Even as a pre-adolescent, I remember singing that song with as much emotion I could muster. As the years went on, she continued to bless the radio waves with gems : Before You Walk Out My Life (1995), Why I Love You So Much (1996), For You I Will (1997), The First Night (1998), Angel of Mine (1999), and So Gone (2003). Each of these songs have meant something very special to me...through good and bad times.

In 2006, I was thrilled to have Monica come back and grace us with her vocals on "The Makings of Me". The lead single from this album Everytime tha Beat Drop feat. Dem Franchize Boyz (Lean Wit' It, Rock Wit' It) did poorly but served as a nice, catchy tune in my opinion. The next two singles released from the LP were A Dozen Roses and Sideline Ho. "Roses" samples C. Mayfield's "The Makings of You" and while the lyrics leave the listener much to be desired, you can't deny her smooth, velvety voice. When I first heard Sideline Ho, I was feeling the song and yes, even the lyrics. But as I listened to it some more, and heard comments from others' about the silly position that she's taken with this song, I can't support the idea of KNOWing there's another woman on the side.

(5/5 Stars)
Why Her? is a beautiful arrangement that asks the question every man/woman wants to know when his/her heart is broken by the respective loved one. Sadly, this question is never answered and songs like this are continuously created and what a lovely creation this track offers. Hell No is a track that explores a woman who refuses to let go of the "good thing" she has with her ex-man. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of what so many people experience when it's hard to gracefully bow out of a dying relationship. Twista lends a verse to the song and Monica spits a response, not missing a beat! Raw has the producer Swizz Beatz all over it and even if he didn't spit a verse, you wouldn't miss his presence. This track showcases Monica as the strong, unbendable woman that she is. Personally, this song has the strongest lyrics and she delivers it superbly. Gotta Move On showcases the strong, unbreakable Monica that most may characterize her as. Missy lends her vocals (background) to this track and it's a great union of two melodic voices. Getaway is a ballad that expresses the need for Monica to escape the craziness that comes from being a celebrity. You can't help but relate to this because we all need time to retreat to a quiet place and refocus.

(3/5 or 4/5 stars - you decide)
My Everything is an okay song and for me it's right around the average scale. I could actually take or leave this track. It's the only piece of work on the album that is an actual celebratory account of a happy relationship.

Overall, I would say this is a pretty solid album. Of course, if you're going through some level of heartache, you can probably appreciate it a lot more. Nevertheless, I can honestly say that Monica didn't disappoint with this disc.

3Better than Beyonce's BDay that's for sure!  Apr 25, 2009
If I had to pick a favorite R&B album of 2006 it would be Monica's "The Makings of Me." If it weren't for the internet I would have never even known that this album existed! The lead single "Everytime Tha Beat Drops" is so addictive with it's beats and rapping. It's Monica at her best. This album is better than Brandy's most recent offering "Human." A lot of the songs are listenable and even though it's not perfect, it is still a LOT better than Beyonce's 2006 album "B Day." I would definately give this 3.5 stars out of 5. Only reason why my rating isn't higher? "The Makings of Me" only has 10 songs.
