Dinah Shore dazzles on enjoyable "King" recording Apr 07, 2009 Recorded and released shortly BEFORE the official Broadway opening of THE KING AND I in 1951, this studio cast 'highlights' album features an all-star lineup of vocal talents, headed by Dinah Shore, Tony Martin and Patrice Munsel under the musical direction of Al Goodman and Henri Rene.
Although Ms Shore would later cover "Hello Young Lovers" many, many times during her long career, the sensitive way she handles the lyric and melody of the song is so classic and timeless, and adds an evergreen quality to the stature of this recording. Shore is a sunny presence as Mrs Anna and brings a fun-loving quality to songs like "I Whistle a Happy Tune" and "Shall We Dance?". Robert Merrill's performance as the King is also very fine.
Classically-trained opera/musical crossover star Patrice Munsel plays Tuptim; rest assured you're in brilliant hands when she launches into the exquisite "My Lord and Master"; Tony Martin joins her for the sublime "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow". Because the recording was done before the Broadway opening, a specially-written Overture medley had to be constructed; you'll also notice that many songs have a modern 'hit parade' sound about them too.
Flare has filled out the remainder of the disc with additional pop covers from Dinah Shore and Tony Martin, performing other songs from the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalogue. A fine addition to your collection.
