Ah, college days... Sep 18, 2009 If you were young and in love a few decades back you undoubtedly stumbled across "Dan" and his magical music. As I recall, every young stud in the late 70s and early 80s was issued a beard, an acoustic guitar, a copy of Innocent Age and a pack of Trojans and was encouraged to go forth and be fruitful. Every time I hear this album I am magically transported back to Stony Brook, late 1980, and my tiny rental on the harbor. Innocent Age and Netherlands provided the soundtrack to more lovemaking than seems humanly possible today, and my younger son, Daniel, quite possibly owes his very existence to the haunting strains of Dancing Shoes, among others. If you loved it then, you will love it now, too.
The Innocent Age--A Musical tour through all life cycles Sep 06, 2009 Dan F.- The consumate performer. I finally got to see Dan about 8 - 9 yrs ago in North Carolina,,WOW what a show. He played steadily w/out a break for 3 1/2 HOURS. all that was on stage was 8 guitars, and 1 Grand piano and Dan...Doesn't get much better than that! The one song I was REALLY hoping he would do was "The Reach." And he did !!! If you get The Innocent Age, Phoenix, Windows and Walls and the 2 duets w/ Tim Weisberg, you could listen to those over n over n over again. The music is just TIRELESS.
Uncomparable Fogleberg at his best Aug 27, 2009 This is by far the biggest effort from Fogelberg in both volume of songs, as well as support artists, orchestrations and sound. This, and probably Netherlands are his best efforts, period. Innocent Age brought Fogelberg into the pop limelight with the hit "Same Old Lang Syne" which brought him into mainstream pop music's acceptance. However, it's the swelling sounds of "The Reach" - a ballad about the lobstermen's work off coastal Maine, where he lived for some period of time that show off his ability to paint a picture with music and lyrics. You can literally feel the ocean's swell and roll as the music plays - it's unbelievable, and one has to hear it first hand to appreciate it.
This collection has a broad and ranging sound from throbbing ballads like The Reach, to stories of eternal existence (Nexus) to odes of love (Only the Heart May Know with Emilou Harris). This album places Fogelberg in a class all his own as one of the greatest modern American song writers and singers. In a day where dance/disco music was still the rage, Fogelberg puts his wares out for all to see, and the shoppers aren't disappointed.
This is a must have for anyone who is not only a Fogelberg fan, but who appreciates story telling in song at its best.
Sadly, Fogelberg succumbed to aggressive prostate cancer in December of 2007. One voice and pen that will be greatly missed in the American music vista.
Fogelberg classic Dec 28, 2008 If you are a Fogelberg fan then this should be in your collection. Many good songs on this double album. That being said I was a little disappointed in the CD version as it seemed to be lacking in the high end for some reason . I then put on the vinyl version of Souvenirs on and what a difference . This is his masterpiece imho . It is much clearer and the mixing of the instruments and harmonies is a lot better . The whole sound is a lot cleaner . This is not to say this should not be in your collection, it should be .
A classic Dec 23, 2008 As a young adult, I anxiously awaited the release of Fogelberg's "The Innocent Age". When the album's release was delayed, I was disappointed. But the disappointment immediately disappeared when I finally heard the album. It was his best ever!! I particularly liked "Ghosts". After all these years, Fogelberg is still my favorite writer/singer, so I am now collecting all his works on CD's. His work is timeless!
