I could not stop thinking about it after I read it Nov 07, 2009 I absolutely loved this book! I don't remember the last time I read a book this good!
With that said, I had a very challenging time getting into it. The first 140 pages were slow and unappealing, but once I hit page 150 I could not put the book down.
I found the character's likable and interesting, the plot was unique and I also just really enjoy Meyer's style of writing. If you are a fan of her other books then you should love this one as well. I usually am not that into Aliens -except for the tv show Roswell - but I loved this book. Just keep in mind it takes a while to get into, but after page 150 - just make sure you have a big chunk of time to sit and read.
Invasion With Flavor! Nov 06, 2009 I have been feeling a bit let down by Stephie in the whole Twilight series. Host is a new take on invasion of the body snatchers. There is nothing new about the basic plot: aliens come to Earth, take over human bodies, kill humans who aren't controllable, and we live in a peaceful nice world. What is new is the inner battle between alien and host. This story is about an alien, Wanderer and her host. The host is strong enough to not only put up a struggle but to shift the aliens' perspective on humans. This is a fast read, even though it appears to be long. You'll enjoy the humanity that is represented by both humans and alien alike.
Amazing! Nov 06, 2009 This book is so much better than the Twilight books. I like vampire books, but the Twilight books are really geared for children. The Host is an adult book with adult concepts and I really loved the depth of the characters and the sci-fi story line. By the way, this one has nothing to do with Vampires.
Great book about relationships and survival Nov 05, 2009 I couldn't put this book down. The writing grabs you from the first page and holds on tight to the very end. There's nothing in it you want to skip over. It's a story about aliens invading human bodies. But there's so much more. The relationships and the fights for survival are this entire story. It doesn't take long for you to start liking the alien, feeling her pain, her accomplishments, the changes in the humans she lives with, the way they all live under the threat of being exposed, the challenges they all face. I highly recommend this book.
Was determined not to read it .... but so glad I did! Nov 04, 2009 After reading the description of this story on the flap of the book, I was determined not to read it. It did not sound like a book that would interest me. I read any genre, except science fiction (though I do enjoy supernatural). This book sounded entirely too sci-fi to me and I was determined not to read it. Well one day, my teaching assistant was sitting in the back of my room weeping as she finished reading this book for the 2nd time and I had to give in (she has been 100% reliable on book recommendations).
I loved this story! It was a new take on the "visitors" story but really had a more "human" feel (which is funny since the main character is an alien). It is very character driven and although the fact that it is about an "alien invastion," is much more about human relationships than anything science-fictiony. The deeper I got into the story, the more I was concerned that there was no way it was going to have a "happy" ending (though a possiblity seemed to present itself to me that wasn't being seen by the characters). I was happy that the book concluded logically and happily (for both me and the characters). This book has a much more "grown up" feel than the Twilight stories.
