Great CD Jan 28, 2009 This is one of those CDs you can listen to all the way through. I really enjoy it. It makes me sad to listen to it now knowing that this band just broke up.
Great CD Dec 07, 2006 Personally, one of my favorite bands and favorite CDs. My friend recommended these guys to me, and I love them. This is probably their best album (IMO), but in general, these guys are great and unique. Just try the samples, or borrow someone's CD
I can't wait for their next album that comes out in 2007

Received it as a gift for Christmas... Feb 14, 2006 ...from a friend who'd accompany me to the beach every weekend. I listened to it with low expectations; I'd been knee-deep in prog-rock, listening to the Mars Volta, Tool, and other bands of the like (and I'm definitely not saying that if you like those bands, you'll like Phantom Planet). However, this CD brought me back to the days of old when music wasn't simply a concept, but created for the sole purpose of entertaining its audience, and those songs went way back to the days of the Eagles or even the Beatles.
Regarding the album, it's extremely listenable. I've found that by pretending that California wasn't played fifty kajillion times over the radio, it's still a great song. Some songs that stood out (not that I'm saying the other songs weren't as good, it's purely based on my own taste) were "Anthem", "Nobody's Fault", "Turn Smile Shift Repeat", and "Wishing Well". Some might say that "Anthem", "California", and "Wishing Well" all have the exact same formula, but hey, if it sounds good, then it works.
If you're still an avid supporter of indie and progressive rock that explores new frontiers of music, that's fine. However, don't let that attitude keep you from listening to a genuinely entertaining album.
And for a truly great experience, I recommend bringing it along to a beach trip; listening to it next to the bonfire and watching the sunset with your best friends or significant other generates fond memories (sorry for those not on the west coast, you're missing out!).
Rating: 4.5 (I rounded it up just because I'd like to see the overall rating become 4.5)

Almost pure good pop! Jan 10, 2006 Catchy pop tunes, but not overly produced. Many of the songs have enough lyrical substance for thinkers, but enough of a sound vibe to try to grab a mainstream audience. I heard "California" when I saw the video way before the O.C. existed. After hearing a sampling somewhere, I picked it up and enjyted tracks 2 - 9 even more. Lonely Day sounded like another hit, and it was released as a video. Always on my Mind is catchy. One Ray of Sunlight is a slow, melodic, song with manly croons placed in all the right places. Turn Smile Shift Repeat sounds like it could be a soft intellectual hit if some other songs made it as releases first. The lyrics of most of the songs really hit home for me, and for those few that don't they certainly are not terrible. Anthem and Darkest Hour are probably the hardest rocking songs, which aren't hard like heavy metal, but harder for variety. They still keep the flow of the CD though. Hey Now Girl and Nobody's Fault are similar to California. A must have for pop lovers abound!

A good indie pop album with a couple flaws - it is, however, not entirely appealing for non-genre fans Jan 06, 2006 Phantom Planet's "The Guest" is a good album with several good songs, but a couple things hurt its rating. The first would be the singer - he's not all that likable. He's not horrible, but most people won't really dig him. Secondly is that the album has several bad tracks on it which definitely hurt the flow of the album. Last is that it's kind of cheesy sounding - you'll most likely feel awkward playing this in front of your friends. Lyrically it's pretty much all about girls and relationships, but none of the songs are insightful or deep. Some of them are catchy ("Always On My Mind" and "California"), but they're also kind of forgettable. Musically this is definitely indie pop - it pretty much sounds like any other indie pop album you've ever heard. Sidenote: "California" , I believe, was a hit in the indie pop scene. The key to its 4-star rating is that it has numerous good indie pop songs. Non-genre fans probably won't like it, but indie pop fans might. All in all a good album which comes slightly recommended.
Highlights include:
"Always On My Mind"
"Lonely Day"
"Anthem"
"Turn Smile Shift Repeat" (kind of)
"Nobody's Fault" (kind of)
"All Over Again" (kind of)
"Something Is Wrong" (sort of)
"California"
