Description:

The Greatest Songs of The Eighties is the next release in a best-selling series of tribute albums of popular music which includes The Greatest Songs of The Fifties, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties and The Greatest Songs Of The Seventies whose cumulative sales, along with Ultimate Manilow have surpassed 5 million units worldwide. The Greatest Songs of The Eighties continues the productive and successful reunion between Manilow and Clive Davis, Arista founder and Chief Creative Officer, Sony BMG. Davis has been Manilow's hitmaking collaborator on virtually all his recordings, since they first worked together on "Mandy". His debut #1 single, as the first artist signed to Arista by Davis in 1974. The two produced The Greatest Songs of The Fifties, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties and The Greatest Songs Of The Seventies together, and that magic has carried over to the new album as well.

3Wanted More from Barry on this One.  Sep 10, 2009
With such a blockbuster set of eighties material and the amazing Barry Manilow's pipes and creative touch, I had high hopes for this album.

* sigh *

He's been in Vegas too long, I'm afraid. Unfortunately instead of doing these songs justice, they are anemic, watered-down, lounge-y (yet well-produced) versions of the originals. Great for weddings or elevator muzak or a Vegas show. You reviewers that are giving this album 5 stars, have you even *heard* the originals??

I ask you all, did these iconic songs need to be remade? Credit Barry for picking outstanding ballads but give me Richard Marx, Phil Collins, Peter Cetera, Cindy Lauper, Steve Perry, George Michael, et. al. before this. This really has the feel of a fishing-for-cash movie sequel.

Summary... all the edge and awesomeness of the originals is leveled out on this Prozac pill of an album. There's little emotion in these renditions, in Barry's baritone and especially in the cheese muzak. No bueno. I'll always be a fan of Barry's but save your bones and buy the originals and/or his greatest hits unless you are a Barry fanatic. Three stars, only because it's Barry and the album is produced well.

5Another great decade of songs by Barry  Apr 24, 2009
As he did with the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, Barry again has delivered another fine mix of songs.

1I Smell Cheese!!!!  Mar 08, 2009
No matter how you spell it....cheesy, cheesie or cheesey...this one takes the cheesecake. Barry should have been arrested for what he did to these songs. I would recommend all to buy this album....for your worst enemy or neighbor with the dogs that howl all night long. Amazon needs to add a half star rating. I would give it that just for the laugh it gave me.

5Excellent!!  Mar 06, 2009
This is a wonderful CD. I've been waiting a long time for Barry to make an 80's CD and I was not disappointed. He did an excellent job! This is a must have for fans!

3Not quite the same...  Feb 24, 2009
Barry Manilow was my favorite artist in the 80's. This rendition of his songs during that period did not have the same impact on me today. It sounded as if he were performing in a nightclub!
