The Good Rat by Jimmy Breslin Feb 03, 2010 Good book but glosses over the fact that Kaplan was a cold blooded murderer who sentenced eight men to certain death including one to death by torture.
Delivers the Goods, As Always Jan 21, 2010 Jimmy Breslin chronicles the exploits of some memorable characters. This generation cut a wide swath through the neighborhoods of New York City. He weaves court testimony with vivid personal anecdotes of Sammy the Bull, Jimmy Burke and Gaspipe Casso. It will be along time, if ever, before we see their like again. The result is an anti-history that combines fact and folklore from some tough Brooklyn neighborhoods, as well as their inevitable and unglamorous demise.
Breslin at his finest Oct 23, 2009
It was still in the decade of the '60s when Jimmy Breslin had a smash hit with his first novel, 'The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.' The novel was all about the mob and its stumbling, moronic members. It is a hilarious novel. It was such a hit that even the title became an oft-used phrase in the public vernacular. To this very day, no less.
Now Breslin comes back 40 years later with another mob tale. This one, however, is about real life. It's about a guy, an urbane, educated, demure older Jewish gentlemen, who improbably worked in the rackets and then winds up ratting out two bad cops who committed murders for the mob.
It's pure Breslin. Which makes it a thrilling piece of work.
A good read for any mafia or crime buff Aug 31, 2009 I have little to add to the other positive reviews except to say I found Breslin's style captivating and fascinating. I found book hard to put down (actually I enjoyed it via audio book in my car during long commutes and found it hard to turn off when commute was over for the day)

a big bunch of nothing Aug 02, 2009 Yes, a big, boring bunch of nothing. I will sell it at my next garage sale, maybe I should just throw it in the garbage. I heard an excerpt on the radio and it sounded good. That must have been the only interesing part --awful.
