Description:

The Geography of Light, the latest Philo recording from folk-roots artist Carrie Newcomer, is a resonant soundtrack for a world that is both sacred and ordinary. Newcomer sings about serious subjects with clarity and elegance, and a healthy measure of good humor and self-awareness, with a voice the Austin Statesman has called "as rich as Godiva chocolate." Her music resonates with Appalachian and classical influences, and The Geography of Light combines piano, violin, mandolin, cello, bass, percussion, and harmony vocal textures with Newcomer's adept guitar work and powerful but intimate vocals. The result is an exceptional album that captures the light and shadow in all of our lives.

5Awsome!  Apr 05, 2009
Carrie shines again. I met Carrie back in the 90's (I think - might have been the 80's) in the Indianapolis area when she was playing restaurants and bars like Grind Stone Charlies. I fell in love then and still am. What a wonderful talent and spirit. We need more like her.

5One of her best  Feb 16, 2009
Best Tracks: There is a Tree, Geodes, Where You Been

I've listened to Carrie Newcomer's music since 1994. I've loved her voice, her style and her songwriting since then.

She's truly unique in her style. As varied as it is, it's like a trusted friend, one that you can keep coming back to--and never be disappointed.

Her songs of life, love and disappointment are heartfelt. Her guitar playing is as wonderful as ever. Carrie's voice is as strong and clear as it ever was.

Her personal views are woven through the songs, but are not preachy. This is another great piece of work.

5Wonderful Music  Jan 15, 2009
I just saw Carrie Newcomer in concert and she is wonderful. I bought her cd during intermission and have been listening to it non-stop ever since. Carrie's guitar work is unbelievable. In my opinion the best songs of the album are "Geodes", "Where You Been", and "Leaves Don't Drop (They Just Fall Down)". Carrie writes such beautiful songs, then she turns things around with humor such as "Don't Push Send." The cd is wonderful, but if you ever have a chance to see Carrie live, definitely take it!
