GOODBYE RAPE! Sep 23, 2009 When asked why the Rape Song "Abduction" was removed from modern productions, the authors explained "Rape had a different meaning back then, and modern audiences might find it offensive" Okay, at what point did the word Rape get a different meaning? It's meant pretty much the same thing for the past 400 years. Re Censoring a musical classic makes The Fantasticks first act SO saccharine, one easily could get insulin OD. The whole second act is dark and offensive, so why remove one of the more CLEVER songs and connotation of the Rape of the Sabine Women, the same story SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS was taken from. Censorship, Political Correctness and the butchering of a standard is disgusting and, as far as I'm concerned, one of the seven Deadly Sins.

Try to remember..... Jun 12, 2009 I have the original cast which I got in 1963 (now on CD) and have loved it since. Watching Jerry Orbach grow from El Gallo to a Broadway musical star and then the best cop on Law and Order was a treat. To this day, the original cast stands radish and sauerkraut above the next few recordings.
I have the Japanese tour, which actually ain't bad, but it's not quite as focused as the first.
And now, the '06 revival. At least the world has a place to see and hear this cautionary, delightful fairy tale romance. And, as with the original, many casts will retell the story....but as a permanent record of the original revival cast, I am extremely disappointed. The Girl has a beautiful singing voice, but the snippets of her scenes are almost painful to listen to. The Boy has his s..t together and is the highlight of the show (the fathers and the supporting cast running a close second).
My biggest disappointment is El Gallo. I thought the film El Gallo was off, but I've found a less powerful example. What happened to trained voices and acting skills over the past 40+ years.
New to THE FANTASTICS? Opt for the original....in this case it's the TOPS!!!
Good, for a new recording Dec 29, 2008 The Fantasticks is one of my favorite shows and I actually had the privilege of seeing this production in New York in 2007. Although I loved the original cast recording, I wanted to have a newer version of the music (plus I thought it might be a pretty good souvenir) so I bought this. This CD is not a bad recording, but I still prefer my original cast album. Burke Moses is phenomenal as El Gallo as is the rest of the cast in their respective roles. You get to hear a bit more dialogue and you get some extra songs in there too, but this version really doesn't seem to have the magic that the original version had. Big, important numbers like "I Can See It" and "They Were You" are good, but they seem to stop just short of magical in my opinion.
To sum up, this is a good recording of a great production. It is good for my collection, and I am glad I bought it, but the original is still the best.
Lovely May 17, 2008 Always a classic, this is almost as wonderful as the original, but with the new release of the re-mastered original cast, I would probably stick to that recording. This is delightful as well though, even if the re-wording of It Depends On What You Pay (in order to remove the use of the word "rape" so as not to offend..) seems obvious, forced and ludicrous. I don't think anyone would find the old context offensive..it couldn't have been more innocently done...
splendid rendition Jan 13, 2008 The Fantasticks has been one of my favorite plays ever since seeing it at the Sullivan Theater in the late 70's. After enjoying the current off-broadway production with Burke Moses, I bought the cd with some trepidation (how could it match the original?) This new cd is amazing! Clear, enthusiastic vocals from all. Crisp and energetic piano and harp accompaniment throughout. With dialogue to pull it all together! You will feel like you're in the audience every time you listen. However, a trip to NYC to see it again would be nice, too.
