Description:

Dionne Warwick's vocals were never more strong, more vulnerable than when she sang the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David--and, oh, yeah, "Who Can I Turn To" and the theme from "Valley of the Dolls," the two non-Bacharach/David songs included among the 24 singles collected here. Both technically and emotionally, this was an unstoppable team: from the drama of "Don't Make Me Over" to the tongue-in-cheek backing singers on "Are You There (With Another Girl)," the barely veiled civil-rights message of "Reach Out for Me" to the deceptively bouncy "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," this CD sheds light on one of the most perfect marriages of pop form and content this side of Sinatra's classic Capitol work. --Rickey Wright

5Creme de la Creme of Warwick's Best Work and Period  Aug 05, 2009
I recently dug this CD out of a box and listened to all the songs after a very long absence. "WOW" is all I have to say, it still leaves me breathless marveling at the work Burt Bacharach, Hal David and of course Dionne Warwick did during their classic decade -- the 1960's. Dionne's voice was a thing of wonder, adding just enough edge to the light-as-air lyrics and arrangements. She seemed not the least bit bothered by the challenging music notes Bacharach stuffed into his songs. The endless leaps and jumps these songs require of a singer could make a singer look like an idiot if she wasn't equipped with the vocal pipes. "I Say A Little Prayer" is a perfect example. Just listen to the tricky music notes Dionne has to leap through during the course of the entire song. I'm not sure if these same songs were sung by anyone else that they would turn out to be the Classics they are today.

Bacharach and David were smart to stick with Dionne and gave her songs that were spun into pure gold. Even after a very long absence, these songs still sound fresh and hummable. That is a true sign of great songwriting. Contrary to what some folks have commented here, I think these songs hold up VERY WELL. Here it is well over 40 years later and you still hear these songs played on most Adult Contemporary radio stations. But it is Dionne's superb mastery of Bacharach-David's songs that make these songs work. She has actually remade these same songs for other record labels since the 1960's, but they don't have the same effect. For one thing, her voice has become heavily tarnished after the 1970's due to heavy smoking (time to quit those cigarettes, Dionne!) Luckily for all of the pop fans, these songs were made during a time when the perfect combination of songwriting, producing, and singing came together. All I can say is "Thanks" for the great music ! These songs will stand the test of time for generations.

5magnificent, unforgettable songs  Jul 16, 2009
The Dionne Warwick Collection: Her All-Time Greatest Hits has nothing but wonderful songs made all the more beautiful by the great Dionne Warwick. Dionne will remain a queen forever; her vocal talent ranks very high in my book. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork is nicely done as well. Burt Bacharach and Hal David also deserve much credit for writing nearly all of the songs on this CD. The two exceptions are "Who Can I Turn To?" which is by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and "Theme from Valley of the Dolls" by André and Dory Previn.

"Don't Make Me Over" starts the CD with Dionne Warwick singing her heart out; she delivers this passionately. The backup singers enhance the ballad--not that Dionne truly needed backup; but they do sound pretty good anyway. "Anyone Who Had a Heart" gets such a fine treatment from Dione; she sings this with great sensitivity and I'm very impressed! I really like "Anyone Who Had a Heart." In addition, there's another gem in "Walk on By;" the piano arrangement is heavenly and Dionne never falters, either. It's wonderful and the percussion also adds to the tune. "A House Is Not a Home" features Dionne front and center--and that's quite all right by me! Dionne again sings with all her heart and soul and that's grand.

"Reach out for Me" has an awesome melody; and there's the emotional "Lookin' with My Eyes, Seein' with My Heart aka (Here I Go Again) Lookin' with My Eyes." This is great--it packs a punch but it does so in such a sophisticated way that you won't forget it anytime soon! "Trains And Boats And Planes" was a big hit for Dionne; she does this with panache and again those backup vocalists harmonize very well. "Another Night" has the perfect music to go with Dionne's singing; and "Alfie" is a major highlight of this album. Dionne Warwick scored a big hit with "Alfie;" and just one listen will tell you why. "I Say A Little Prayer" was always one of my favorite Dionne Warwick songs; she does this to perfection--and beyond! "I Say A Little Prayer" charms me with its natural beauty and it's quite a love song, too.

The theme from "Valley of The Dolls" shines brighter than silver and gold in Dionne Warwick's capable hands; and I could never tire of Dionne performing "Do You Know the Way to San José." "Do You Know the Way to San José" was and always will be one of Dionne's best known hits; only she could have done this so very well and the drums make the music even better! "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" just plain sounds good; Dionne aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing--but of course we know it really wasn't all that easy. Dionne's talent carries her through. "Promises, Promises" sparkles when Dionne does this wonderfully; and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" is quite a classic song that Dionne makes all her own with her superlative phrasing and her excellent diction.

This album is a must-have for Dionne's fans; and it certainly makes a fine starter CD for people just getting into Dionne Warwick. It's also a good album to choose if you're a casual Dionne Warwick fan and you don't want to spend a lot of money for all her albums.

4Great  Jan 17, 2009
Some how I had never actually purchased any of her albums even though I loved her music since it came out (could be that I freeloaded on room mates and the radio). This has filled a major gap in my collection and restored my love of her music. Highly recommended.
