Description:

Travis seemingly disappeared after the arguably forgettable 12 Memories but the sound of the Scottish group's daydream-pretty guitar rock endured thanks to Keane, Snow Patrol, and especially Coldplay. More than three years later, Travis is playing catch-up with their fifth studio album, The Boy with No Name. Predictably, it's a well-crafted affair, bursting to life with tunes that celebrate life's minor victories such as "Closer," "Battleships," and "My Eyes." But as a comeback effort it feels flawed, let down by both melodies that disappear into the ether as quickly as they come out of the speakers ("One Night," "3 Times You Lose") and those that clumsily attempt to tweak the formula ("Eyes Wide Open," "Selfish Jean"). --Aidin Vaziri

5Another great Travis album  Oct 10, 2009
After a long pause, Travis is back with a new strong release. The sound is the familiar crispy; perhaps with a fuller production than what was heard on the previous albums.

The songs are generally strong, with several jewels among. The very melodic and catchy "Closer" and "My Eyes" (one of the most beautiful songs the group has written), are both well known singles.

Other similar strong tracks are "Battleships" and "Three Times and You Lose", both of them potential singles.

The group shows itself from the more rocking side with the single "Selfish Jean" and the Oasis-inspired "Eyes Wide Open".

"Out in Space" is an unpretentious Donovan-like thing - very charming.

Closing-track "New Amsterdam" is a different, slightly folk-like number, and another highlight.

Actually I do not have much objection to this album, which is perhaps the group's most successful.

4Se hicieron extrañar...  Jun 16, 2009

2Well runs dry  Dec 15, 2008
Most bands are not expected to grow leaps and bounds between albums, but mild Brit rockers Travis seem to completely ignore the concept and if anything, have slipped backwards. It is none more apparent then on this ultra-derivative outing, recreating essentially weaker versions of songs they covered better elsewhere in the past. Colder feels like the only song that matters here.

5Happy, Cheery & Musical  Nov 21, 2008
If you love Travis, buy this album.

You can feel the love in this album. It ooozes out... It is light, happy, cheery & musical. It encompasses everything I love about Travis.

Fran's voice is really beautiful on this album. It's really powerful, yet sweet & controlled at the same time. It really stands out on this album.

This album is very melodic. There are really pretty accoustic guitar sounds & cool, catchy rhythms. All the sounds from each band member blend perfectly. It just flows really well.

This is one of those albums you pop in the cd player and you like instantly. I didn't have to listen to it over & over again to start appreciating it.

It is very well produced and recorded. Really clear, bright sounding. You start singing with it instantly!

Get it and enjoy! There is not one song on this that I don't like! That's hard to do! :)

4back to the basics!  Jul 13, 2008
"The Boy With No Name" sees Travis return to familiar territory. After taking a somewhat dark and foreboding turn with their last studio release "12 Memories," we are now back to the more uplifting tunes and harmonies of "The Man Who" and "The Invisible Band." Fran Healy has an incredible voice and knack at hitting those impressive falsettos that really get you, and on standouts such as Battleships, we are treated to Fran at his best. I was blown away by the vocals on this great song. My Eyes, I guess, was written for his newborn child. Catchy song, and will stick w/ you just like Battleships. Closer is another winner, as are Eyes Wide Open and Out in Space. Travis is back in their well defined, and comfortable niche with this new cd. And I for one hope they stick to it. Some bands get away with experimentation and broadening their sound, but most bands only fall off the charts by doing so. Travis has done well by releasing a cd that sticks to what they do best!
