The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs - Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006 May 30, 2009 The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs - Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006 being Dylan's 2008 release and a compilation of unreleased tracks between 1989 and 2006. The album was met with great reviews by the critics and I agree with this. Tracks are culled from the recording sessions when he recorded albums such as Oh Mercy, Modern Times, Time Out of Mind as well as tracks from soundtracks, i.e., North Country and Lucky You. The booklet has great liner notes written by Larry Sloman and liner notes for each track along with a list of whom played what on the album. We also get many great photographs of Dylan in different settings. 5/5.
Thoughts On the 1 Disc vs 2 Disc/3 Disc Set May 08, 2009 I'm no authority on Bob Dylan but I've been listening to him since 1963 and I'm ok with saying I think I can tell the difference between good Dylan and great Dylan where my own musical tastes are concerned. He's been telling us for decades that his songs don't have any deep, hidden meaning and they're just artistic constructions of a professional songsmith- each with its own seperate life and arc that no longer has much to do with him except maybe as something he can deconstruct and use again in another way in another time. As a painter, I understand this. Once the painting is finished it stands on its own merit and may or may not offer future inspiration, but I also know that for every 100 songs or paintings or poems or at bats there will be 1-2 moments in human effort that simply transcend the good stuff and morph into something approaching pure light, a portal, or an answer. This to me is Disc 1. Simply a must have for anyone who knows and appreciates any type of serious music. Disc 2, in my opinion, is only ok and I can easily live without it except for maybe "Ain't Talkin". Disc 3 I haven't heard. Only 2 other CDs I've bought in the past few years have reached the artistry of Disc 1- most will already know about "The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble" but many may be unaware of "Bronx in Blue" by Dion. Any of these 3 CDs are quite capable of offering up what is musically possible when the muse makes an appearance and sits down beside a mature, gifted artist, with a lifetime of experience.

Tell Tale Signs Vilume 8 Mar 07, 2009 I like the alternate versions of Dylan's tunes. I think they
portray the authentic Dylan. Just raw Dylan !

Dylan's Archaic Music Feb 20, 2009 This is a hugely satisfying album, and is essential for anyone who loves the music of Bob Dylan. It has a deep, rich sound that is timeless - "archaic," if you will. Even more amazing, given that it is a compilation album spanning many years, it feels whole, fully-formed. This is undoubtedly due to Jeff Rosen's long, sympathetic relationship with Dylan. The booklet's liner notes are quite good, and their anecdotes, along with the combination of unreleased music and the variety of photographs in the booklet suggest a new kind of vulnerability from behind the mask of this unique artist. The many songs produced in association with Daniel Lanois make it a wonderful companion to the second half of Dylan's memoir, Chronicles.
