Description:

Nebraska-born Josh Rouse started out on Rykodisc where he released five albums and two EPs of literate and engaging guitar pop, which garnered him both critical raves and a devoted following. Now, a decade after his debut, The Best Of The Rykodisc Years collects together highlights from those Rykodisc albums as well as treasures from Josh's own personal vaults, including 7 previously unreleased tracks, to produce over 2 hours of sublime music spanning 1998-2005. The Best Of The Rykodisc Years distills the essence of what Rouse calls his "first stage". Years and musical styles may separate these songs, but ultimately they are linked through the warmth of Rouse's vioce, the conversational ease of his singing and his unfailing melodic gift. From the folk-rock of 'Late Night Conversation' to the knowing country of 'It's The Nighttime', from the smart pop of 'Feeling no Pain' to the rhythmically sly white-boy soul of 'Comeback (Light Therapy)' - each bears Rouse's unmistakable musical fingerprint. Disc 1 features 19 favourites from Rykodisc releases - debut Dressed Up Like Nebraska (1998), EP collaboration with Lambchop's Kurt Wagner Chester (1999), Home (2000), Under Cold Blue Stars (2002), 1972 (2003) and Nashville (2005). Included are 'Directions', a song from Rouse's second album that also appeared on the soundtrack for the Cameron Crowe film Vanilla Sky and '65', referring to the highway that runs through Nashville, which is where he and Wagner recorded Chester when the two were neighbours. Disc 2 opens with the six songs that comprised Rouse's 2001 EP Bedroom Classics, Vol. 1, (pressed in a limited edition of only 750 copies and now an impossible-to-find collectable) and continues with 7 previously unreleased recordings including the demos for "Suburban Sweetheart" and "Christmas With Jesus" and outtake for "Cannot Talk":

5A rare "Best Of" collection that works.  Sep 07, 2009
Having "discovered" Josh Rouse a full decade after his first album was released, I picked up this collection on a whim after hearing singles from "Country Mouse City House" (none of which are represented here BTW). The immediate accessibility of this record is deceptive, the easy melodic flow of every track stands up very well to repeated listening for those that appreciate literate, honest and intelligent songwriting. There's nothing new or particularly groundbreaking here, just consistent, finely crafted recordings in the adult-oriented pop style that draws on subtle influences from folk to alt-country.

This is the bedrock on which a career is built. Subsequent records released by a new label are more adventurous in style and substance but for an introduction to Josh Rouse, this album is highly recommended.

5Great tunes...  Jan 02, 2009
These are just great tunes for road trips, quite evenings at home, and slowing down a little to take it all in... love it!

4missing the radar  Nov 19, 2008
Josh Rouse has been plying his trade for the past 10 years, consistently churning out great albums, but to date, he remains just off the radar of prominent success.

Considering how successful the likes of Jason Mraz and John Mayer are these days, it comes as quite a surprise why Rouse can't attain such stellar status.

This collection traces his output from 1998 to 2005. All the tunes sound so good, it's hard to name a favourite. My only gripe is that 'Miracles', from 'Under the Cold Blue Stars' isn't on the tracklist. However, the 2nd disc of outtakes and rarities more than makes up for that omission.

5a truly great deal  Nov 16, 2008
For a double disc album, this price is more than fair! I saw josh rouse perform live last month and just had to order some of his music. This seemed like the best bang for my buck, and I'm very pleased with the purchase.

5Indispensable  Oct 09, 2008
I own and cherish everything this guy's done. I hesitated on pulling the trigger on a collection with a great deal of stuff I already bought or downloaded, but listening to Disc One the other day made me wonder why I would ever doubt J.R.. And Disc Two might be better for those of us lucky enough to be up to speed with his unrivaled catalogue. Timeless.
