The secret to a joy filled life Oct 26, 2009 The title, "The 4:8 Principle" comes from Philippians 4:8. It is about making life changes, using timeless advice from the Bible, dating back to between A.D. 53 to 59. It is contained in a letter that the apostle Paul wrote to the church at Philippi.
Paul told them to think on these things:*Whatever is true
*Whatever is noble
*Whatever is right
*Whatever is pure
*Whatever is lovely
*Whatever is admirable
*Anything that is excellent or praiseworthy
All good advice. I have studied this passage before and I understand that it is the right thing to do. However, understanding it and believing it and then actually practicing it are different things. Focusing my thoughts on these words doesn't help. They need to be fleshed-out and made real to me. Even then, thinking on those things in a steady, continually basis is difficult. My mind often tends to take off on its own without any guidance or control on my part.
This book is, in effect, a course in changing thinking habits. It is getting away from the common way of thinking and turning thinking habits into a way that opens up the potential for experiencing joy. The author, Tommy Newberry, says that while there will always be both junk and greatness in life, we can choose not to focus on the junk and deliberately choose to focus on the greatness.
"The 4:8 Principle" is divided into three main sections.1.Discovering your joy. This involves understanding that life is meant to be joyful, focusing on that which produces joy and embracing the person God created us to be.
2.Developing your joy This involves fortifying your self-concept and authentic self-esteem, taking charge of your emotional life and starving negative emotions.
3.Defending your joy This involves guarding your heart, having a healthy mind and living with gratitude.
This book involves more than a quick read through - at least for me. It requires taking notes and actively focusing on the principles. Each chapter concludes with a prayer and one activity (homework) that brings home the theme of the chapter.
"The 4:8 Principal" is a fascinating and very useful book. It closely follows biblical principles and doesn't go off into the self-serving visualization that some similar secular books have promoted.

Pure Joy. Aug 14, 2009 It was beautiful to see this book dove-tail with other books I am reading: the joy in John Piper's books, the joy in C.S. Lewis and Dallas Willard's books and
oddly enough, the joy in Juliana of Norwich's "Revelations of Divine Love" which was written in the 14th century!! This 4:8 book is a terrific 200 page introduction to the Christian life--suitable for a beginner's group study or as a fabulous review for those older in the faith. The write up on the author near the back is quite interesting and it sounds like he practices what he preaches--Smile!
The 4:8 Principle May 04, 2009 This one has a very positive message within its pages and the practical everyday advice. Love this book have shared it with several friends everyone should read this.
This book can definitely change a life in a great way! Apr 04, 2009 Tommy's book the 4:8 Principle can and has changed lives for the better. Capturing the power of God's Word from Philippians 4:8, he has taken it and made it practical to our daily lives. Don't skip the introduction, as this entire book has so much to offer! If you are seeking a meaningful book as a gift, this one is right up there! If you are searching for something to form a small group study around, you just found it.
This book is an easy read and has the potential to really impact your life in a joyful way. This is not just the power of positive thinking, this goes so much further than that, just consider the basis of the book.
There are very few books I have seen that cause people to run right out and get multiple copies to give away, but The 4:8 Principle is just that.
I honestly do not think you would be disappointed in this book, and if you put it into practice, you can find yourself having authentic, and lasting joy...regardless of your circumstances.

THE 4:8 principle Mar 11, 2009 This book has a very important biblical principle to teach however the author is frequently too wordy and goes off on a tangent minimalizing the effectiveness of the book. I wish it could have been more condensed so the book would have been more memorable spiritually. There appeared to be too much motivational rhetoric and not enough focus on biblical substance!
Thank God for any book that focuses on his word.
