5We need more like this on SACD!!!  Feb 05, 2010
I bought this on vinyl when I was a teenager. One of my favorite albums ever. This SACD is as close to bringing Carol King into your living room as you'll ever get.

4CD Not As Good As Vinyl  Jan 19, 2010
This review is about the music quality of the 1999 remastered CD with 2 added tracks and not the music itself. It goes without saying that this is some of the finest pop/folk/rock music ever written and I agree with many other reviews that every song on this 1971 release is great. The lyrics especially are warm yet cut right to the heart of the matter.

I am not a vinyl "purist" and in fact prefer CDs over vinyl in most cases. Howver, this album is an exception. I still have a mint condition vinyl version of this recording (purchased in 1971) and in comparing to this "remastered" CD I think the vinyl actually sounds a bit better. Case in point is the best song on the album, "It's Too Late." Listening on headphones on vinyl the bass, drums and Carole's voice are mixed almost equally and are in the center of the recording. Some of the guitar solo is on the far left channel and what sounds like an electric piano is on the far right. There seems to be so much energy in the bass guitar and drums but it does not drown out Carole's voice at all. The recording sounds like you are there in the studio.

In the CD version, the mix left to right is exactly the same as on vinyl, but the snare drum seems slightly muted compared to the bass guitar and Carole's voice. Meanwhile the bass guitar, while clearly audible, just doesn't seem to have as much life as on the vinyl version. Any attempt to increase the bass response just drowns out the drums even further. Also, it seems that on the loudest parts of Carole's singing, her voice clips out a little and has that sandpapery distorted sound that one usually hears when high notes are played on a worn out vinyl record. This album originally did not have much in the way of super high end sounds like shimmering acoustic guitar strumming (like David Crosby's If Only I Could Remember My Name) or cymbals, so it is difficult to say if the high end is muted on the CD compared to vinyl. Both CD and vinyl have somewhat muted cymbals.

These differences are very subtle but clearly the CD did not blow me away as being superior audio to the vinyl copy. In fact it seems to be slightly worse. Perhaps it is because this is a very acoustic album with a female voice, but one can really hear the difference at the high points in a song, such as in the chorus. The CD version has that shrill sound that CDs are so infamous for. This may be a case of age of the master tapes, I don't know.

In summary, the CD is OK and the music is certainly fantastic, but anyone owes it to themselves to find a good vinyl version and have a listen. You will be amazed at the depth and quality of the drums and bass compared to the CD version. And Carole's voice to me sounds less distorted on vinyl.

FOR THE LAST FORTY YEARS THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITS. MY ONLY COMPLAINT, IN FORTY YEAR THER HAVE BEEN FOUR DIFFERENT FORMATS IN RECORDINGS. I HOPE THE CURRENT CD'S ARE HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL. I HATE TO REPLACE MY COLLECTION EVERY TEN YEARS.

I didn't realize that "Import" meant that the CD would not be an original but a re-recorded CD. Am not happy and have not decided whether I will bother to return the CD or not.
