One of the Very Best of Satriani's collection Jan 30, 2010 Being a Satriani's fan since I was a high school student, this one was a must and recently added CD+DVD to my collection. You will heard a better volume level than the old and previous releases. Those classic satch's songs, the amazing "Surfing with the alien", "Always with me...", "Echo", sounds so great, more than words can say!!
The DVD is a never seen before live performing from the Montreaux Jazz Festival 1988. With the Stuart Hamm partnership on the bass, you delight a excellent quality of image and sound that only a very good work like this can brings to you. It will take you back there. The songs performed by Joe and Stuart would sound as never and you would notice that the "master" continues performing equal or better than in his beginnings.
As I said before, this Legacy is a must!!
I've Always Loved This CD Jun 13, 2009 For starters, I've purchased this album 4 times. Cassette in high school. CD in early 90's when I bought a CD player. Remastered version when that became available. Now the Deluxe version comes out with a concert.
Imagine if all of our favorite artists released a concert DVD from early in their career, with a definitive album like this. The DVD is great--filmed at the same hostile venue that booed Stevie Ray Vaughn just a few years earlier. Great setlist. A lot of great rarities here. Hordes of Locusts and Memories, from Dreaming # 11. Solid setlist, solid performances. Worth the price all by itself.
Surfing With the Alien was early in Joe's career. Some of his best work. I look at his setlists and evaluate their content based on whether they contain songs like Ice 9, Circles, and Midnight. This album is great from start to finish.
I love Joe's collective work--there is an evolution there, with the songs from this album serving as "tent posts". Possibly my favorite is "Crushing Day". This is a song that he doesn't perform much live, but is truly a great guitar performance. His later works, show more depth and textures--this one is a great workout album. It shows off his guitar talent.
These songs are compact, awesome examples of Joe's capabilities. This is a must. I've also always admired the album art. Not many musicians pull in comic book artists.

One of the best albums Apr 06, 2008 Wow, what a great cd! The excitement is great, music is great, feelings are great. While Joe Satriani takes guitar playing to another level, we listen to this music in wonder of how he performs with such emotion felt without even hearing singing. I guess his guitar does it for him which is awesome. This is definately one of the best albums I have heard, and this remastered version is sweet! The DVD is well worth the price too. A great set for someone looking for something different and just plain old excitement. I won't bother listing single tracks cause I love all of them. Ill just list all of them.
Track List:
"Surfing with the Alien" - 4:25
"Ice 9" - 3:59
"Crushing Day" - 5:14
"Always with Me, Always with You" - 3:22
"Satch Boogie" - 3:13
"Hill of the Skull" - 1:48
"Circles" - 3:28
"Lords of Karma" - 4:48
"Midnight" - 1:42
"Echo" - 5:37
A true master Apr 04, 2008 This is the second time around for me on surfing with the alien.
I grabbed it for the remix and the dvd. The disc was a ground breaker and if you are just checking out Satriani this is great one to start with. If you know his music and enjoy and don't have this one, shame shame shame.
This may be from the 80's but it does not sound dated and was revolutionary in the way the guitar was played and recorded in the future.
How do you not love a DVD of Joe?
