Super Colossal, Indeed! Jan 15, 2010 Many years ago, perhaps in the mid-90s, I purchased "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani and it gradually grew to be one of my all-time favorite albums. It was intense and edgy, but at the same time extremely melodic. It was an all instrumental album and anyone who was open to listening could hear that Joe Satriana was a guitar virtuoso second to none. I loved that album. If it had been an LP, it would have been worn out long ago. I liked to play it as background music at fairly high volume while I was busy with other tasks. I'd play it in my office while busy with paperwork. A student once came in and asked if that was Joe Satriani. I answered that it was and inquired if he liked Satriani. He said he did very much, but didn't expect to find his music playing on the computer in his professor's office. In any case, "Surfing with the Alien" somehow had a very soothing and relaxing effect on me. It's an album I have never tired of, not even to this day,
I bought a second Satriani CD ("Flying in a Blue Dream'). It was an excellent album, but just not up to "Surfing with the Alien," in my opinion, and it didn't have the same mesmerizing effect on me. Then recently, I heard of a more recent Satriani release, "Super Colossal." It was compared favorably to "Surfing with the Alien." Of course, I had to have it.
"Super Colossal" is an exceptional album and lives up to it's name. In many ways it greatly resembles "Surfing with the Alien." I'd say it's a little less intense and a little more mellow than "Alien," but anyone who liked "Alien" would also like this album. As with "Alien," the music is almost entirely instrumental, and I love Satriani's instrumentals. The CD presents a good range of songs, styles and moods. No songs stand out as clear favorites and there's not a bad song on the CD. As such, I tend to play it as background music and I like to have it up at fairly high volume, just as I do with "Alien."
If pressed to choose which was the best album, "Alien" or "Super Colossal," I'd give "Alien" the nod, but only by a slight margin. This presents a problem as to the star rating. If I gave "Surfing" five stars, does this mean "Super Colossal" should get a four? I think not. "Super Colossal" is a fine album and is equal to any non-Satriani five-star award I've ever given.

Psychedelic !!!! Sep 19, 2008 Geez, what can you say when Joe Satriani is involved? Whether you like to hear instrumental with an edge or learn some concepts from his style? This is it!!! It's killer!! I think I'm wearing it out. Nice grooves with stylistic finesse...
THE GREATEST SATRIANI CD EVER Jan 21, 2008 Super Colossal is the best Joe Satriani CD and is my favorite Satriani CD. This is possibly his finest hour as some of his greatest songs like A Cool New Way which I would rate as my favorite Satriani song of all time, Super Colossal, It's So Good, One Robot's Dream, and Redshift Riders. I wish his greatest hits would contain all these songs, it is missing too many great songs. It is almost 2 years old and it is still Satch's latest disc.
Jukeboxing Day Dec 26, 2007 Roundabout midday yesterday I intrepidly manoeuvered four slippery dollar bills into the jukebox and played the first eight songs off of this record and right from after the opening riff of Super Colossal itself I knew at last my latest Christmas had finally come. I'd never even heard of this guy before some time ago but another guy I know who used to and still does ride around in circles--just like me!--used also to keep punching in that first track on the jukebox and right enough Satch is cherry axe dude every time here but this second guy shouldn't have only just played the lead-off number over and over coz the rest of the album right up to The Meaning of Love is equally blissed out and brawny twang doodle but then that was that because me and the Wurlitzer ran out of dosh. Next I think I tried the library, which was closed, natch. Still though there are five more songs on Satch's Super Colossal which when I own the dang disk personally I'm going to bung in the Toshiba every chance I get.
Joe gets old school as only Joe can Dec 09, 2007 I've been a die-hard Joe fan across his entire career. He never fails to find new ways to express his feel for musical expression with his virtuosity on the axe. This recording is more outstanding Joe musicality and execution with a return to some of his roots.
