Probably one of the best real hardcore punk albums Nov 12, 2009 First time I heard this album, i just got pissed of what became of punk or mostly all of todays hardcore. Because this album is so damn good it is everything that real punk was about. You get some guitar solos? back in the day that was still unheard of in hardcore, i think. Institutionalized was every punk fans every day life, who knows about the pepsi tough. You got to love that song even if it's the band more popular tune, you just feel like screaming about everything that sucks in your life every time you hear it. Mike Muir also shows some of his singing in one of the songs which was still pretty hardcore. And there's a riff similar to Black sabbath in one of the tracks, you will notice it in a instant but as soon as you can say war pigs, you're suddenly into hardcore greatness. This album is a MUST for any true hardcore or metal fan. It cross boundaries like other bands at that time didn't. After this masterpiece, they crossover to thrash metal and since i wasn't really a thrash fan except for maybe Slayer, i disliked everything they did after their debut. But since thrash metal got it's help from early hardcore punk, then what was the better music to mosh to right? there's nothing like old thrash and old punk, so both sides are the best music to get caught in a mosh. Unlike scene kids today who stand still while the other (I'm so hardcore man) kids dance like girls In a laughable "pit", because they're avoiding to get hurt. I may not like Suicidal tendencies in person (the gang attitudes i guess) but they make some bad @ss hardcore. They are also underrated as a thrash band but also in punk (for hardcocre fans, we know what kind of punk). So either Join the army or buy this. Ha!
Back in the day Dec 17, 2008 LOL. I just pulled my original cassette tape of this album that I bought in 1983. This album will be golden in the punk era forever. Other original cassettes that I have are Minor Threat - First Two 7's, S.O.D. - Speak English or Die, Sacred Reich - Surf Nicaragua, Slayer - Reign in Blood, Metallica - Kill'em All..... OMG, I still have Kraftwerk on cassette. BUT, anyway.... all these are classic albums from the 80's...must haves if you like this genre.
NiCE! Nov 02, 2008 +1
Just had to give it a Five out of Five. I hadn't listened to this "TAPE" in years. Bought the CD and forgot how good it was!
Review Number 50 Sep 01, 2008 There are 49 prior reviews. MINE is number 50. Add me to all the other 5 star reviews. Like so many others, my prior exposure was via Repo Man. Well, some 25 years or more later, I bought this record by sheer accident at a pawn shop. (Also for full price on Amazon just bought Circle Jerks 'Group Sex', which I'm pleased to report stands the test of time; a slam down memory lane.) What a discovery. As great as is 'Institutionalized,' S.T. is hardly a one-hit wonder. All of the other songs on this record are punk perfection, intense, but musical and topical. (I shot Reagan!) If they'd kept this lineup together, they would have eclipsed Dead Kennedys and would be the U.S. answer to the Clash. But I suppose Punk was dying by the early '80s when they hit the scene, so it's best to go out in style before they devolved into metal. The Wikipedia entry is fascinating. Seems like anyone with a guitar in L.A. has been in this band. Anyhow, I'm so totally impressed. In high school I listened to a lot of Clash, Gang of Four, Buzzcocks, Bowie, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Hypstyrz (here's my plug - best SST classic Minneapolis garage punk band you've never heard of -- BUY IT before it goes out of print, you imbeciles). Anyhow, I digress. This S.T. album should be on anyone's top 100 rock and roll albums, and certainly top 20 of punk albums.

I almost forgot about this album! Feb 19, 2008 I'm so old, I had this cassette when I was in high school. I was one of the white suburban punks who discovered this band on the Repo Man soundtrack. I haven't dragged the CD out in 10 years and now at the tender age of 40, I can't believe how FANTASTIC this thing is! It sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday.
You kids today should thank the rock gods for this band. They were doing what you are now hearing in 1983!
