Description:

Nas's 1994 debut, Illmatic, is hands down one of the greatest rap LPs of all time. Open to debate is why he ditched his lyrical genius and raw, gully beats to go pop on his next three albums. On his fifth solo LP, Nas returns to his grimy, hardcore roots. On "Ether," Nas disses Jay-Z mercilessly (a response to Jay-Z's anti-Nas stabs on "Takeover" from The Blueprint). Nas then proceeds to dis Prodigy of Mobb Deep and a whole slew of other Queensbridge-based MCs on "Destroy and Rebuild." When he's not busy tearing into fellow New York-based MCs, Nas pulls a politico routine on "My Country," questioning the blind patriotism of many African Americans, flips rhymes with former Firm compadre AZ on "The Flyest," and pays homage to Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G on "Got Ur Self a...." However, the albums finest artistic moment comes on "Rewind," where Nas crafts a sexploit and murder-filled 'hood narrative in which the story and wordplay are recited in reverse (think Tarantino's Pulp Fiction on celluloid). With beats supplied by DJ Premier, Large Professor, and Swizz Beatz, Nas has arguably reclaimed his throne as the MC king of New York. --Dalton Higgins

5Real Classic Hip Hop  Nov 25, 2009
Stillmatic was the hip hop record of late 2001 early 2002 when it was released back in the day 8 years ago dam! Already, put me back into my proud of hip hop state once again. Knowing a mcee can write lyrics that sound as if they were scriptures is simply amazing. Not, worrying about being commercial a great album will accomplish sells reguardless. I wish someone would dis Nas again like jay did. So we can get some of that pure poetry I know Nas can process and deliver. A true artist can make you invision their thoughts like a paint brush to a canvas inside your mind. Im not going to waste time writing down tracks I feel and why I do. Because, my review would be to dam long to read. Stillmatic is one of those rare rap albums within' the past 10 years you can play threw without skips. Put it like this if you love real hip hop that means something. With story telling and a little educational factor in it this is your album.

5Nas Stillmatic!!!  Oct 15, 2009
Hey all, just wanted to let everyone know this album is bananas. Stillmatic is another example of good hip-hop. I'm truly a big fan of Nas and this album is one of the reason's why. Hot tracks like "poision" and "ether" made this album an instant classic. "Ether" made people say Jay-Z who?. I give this album more than 5 stars.

5Part Two to Illmatic...  Sep 25, 2009
Nas really stepped up his game with this album not only was "Ether" great but the rest of the album as well. You can't forget "Got urself a Gun", "One Mic", "Your the man" and etc... Nas truly became a well respected rapper after this one and considered one of the greatests rappers in the world. So what are you waiting for go and get this album.

4NaS - Stillmatic  Jul 07, 2008
This album was so important for Nas's career. If he wouldnt have done this album, im afraid people would have lost interest in Nas. After the terrible Nastradamus, and the mediocre at best I Am, He needed to get another homerun. And to be honest, i guess this wasnt really a home run, but it definetly got the bases loaded for the home run to follow in the form of God's Son. But none the less, he stepped his game up from his previous two releases to prove he was still relevant in rap. The biggest thing with this album was the swagger, and its more hardcore/street appearance. Now, we all know that Nas has always been street, but on songs like the very eerie and dark "Got Urself A..." he shows his true darkside. And then it also re-emerges on the bitter and angry "My Country". But Nas is at his best on tracks like the diss track aimed towards Jay Z "Ether" which is proclaimed as one of the best diss tracks of all time, and then on "2nd Childhood" where he takes the more mellow approach about describing how he is living his childhood again. But one of the very best songs on this album is the single "One Mic". Arguably one of the best hip hop songs of all time with its strong message and just down rite epic production. Like i said earlier, this is definetly not the best rap album, or even the best Nas album, but its a really strong album that just adds to his thristy catalouge. Basically this album just re established an diminishing career that needed a lift, and that lift came in the form of Stillmatic.
