Best Since Gone with The Wind Nov 21, 2009 I have to say "South of Broad" was the best book I've read since "Gone with the Wind". Took me a couple of tries to get into it but once I did, it was great - especially if you are from the South. Your characters were so real and true. Thanks, I loved it.

Where did Conroy go? Nov 21, 2009 There were glimpses of Conroy's voice in this novel, but for the most part, I couldn't find him. The first few chapters were so filled with purple prose, it was hard not to laugh at times..who is this writer masquerading as Conroy? Eventually, the excesses stopped and I could focus on the story, but I should have just put it down and re-read Prince of Tides.

One of the best writers living today Nov 21, 2009 I've only read one chapter so far, because you want to read each line over again. His words are as rich as chocolate cake. I felt the same about "The Prince of Tides", one of my alltime favorites. With most books, I'm bored with the descriptions and I just want to get to the plot. With Pat Conroy, the descriptions enthrall me. I even read the first couple of paragraphs to my husband. No one writes like Pat Conroy. His words are gorgeous, and you never want them to stop.

Wouldn't, couldn't even finish it Nov 21, 2009 I was excited to read this book. I live just down the road from Charleston, in Savannah. This was to be my first Pat Conroy book, around here, he's revered (almost as much as Johnny Mercer, the composer).
For the first 50 pages, I told myself that I just needed to adjust to the saccharin sweet prose, like I had to adjust to sweet tea when I moved here from San Francisco. The next 50 pages I read in disbelief, it couldn't really be this bad, this predictable. The next, and last for me, 100 pages were read with a mixture of anger and despair. I was let down.
I could not read any further, and please know that I rarely ever put a book down before I muscle my way through it. This book, however, was not going to steal one more second of my life.

Amazing ....a wonderful exceptional read! Nov 20, 2009 A dear friend and avid reader shared this book with me as she related that Pat Conroy was one of her very favorite writers.
New to Mr. Conroy, his literary style and personal history, I embarked on this novel with an open mind.
The first portion of the book I did find somewhat difficult to understand, its import and how it would ultimately impact the very multi dimensional direction of the novel.
As I got past the setting stage, so to speak, I understood that an effective prelude introduced the faceted charcters and their stories, as set to paper by Leo Toad King.
Characters are well defined and memorable. Mr. Conroy can write of love, anguish, friendship, family, sports, suicide, hurricanes, homesexuality, roman catholicism, outcasts, poverty, ethics, courage, compassion, service, predudice, acceptance, fantasy, loss, murder, abuse and so much more.
It is all in this amazing book. The further you get into it, the more you pause, and the spirit and emotion it generates is extraordinary.
