Description:

In Something Like Human, the moody and brutally emotional rock band Fuel has a solid follow-up to their platinum Sunburn disc from 1998. Produced by Ben Grosse (Filter, Vertical Horizon) and coproduced by Fuel guitarist-songwriter Carl Bell, Something Like Human picks up where Sunburn left off, both musically and emotionally. From Brett Scallions's heart-wrenching vocal performance on the CD's first single, "Hemorrhage (in My Hands)," with its mournful reflections to the "Shimmer"-like "Slow," the bleak, dark temperament that characterized Sunburn is continued. Even seemingly upbeat moments are buried deep in paranoia ("Knives") or leave a bitter taste ("Solace"). Not as dirge-heavy as Alice in Chains (though "Down" sounds like that band) or as commercially viable as Creed, Fuel nonetheless have the strong songs and melodies to make their doleful musical visions eminently memorable and quietly cool. --Katherine Turman

5Excellent album  Oct 31, 2009
I got this CD almost 10 years ago, and given the passage of time, I still think it is amazing. My tastes for rock developed with the grunge bands in the '90's - Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains. Something like Human definitely sounds like a derivative of grunge, particularly Alice in Chains. Scallions voice sounds eerily similar to Staley on certain tracks (Scar, Easy). Structure wise the songs are very dynamic, catchy, and enjoyable. I feel like the weakest songs were released to radio (Bad Day, Innocent) but they are more than compensated for with the standouts Solace, Easy, Prove, Empty Spaces, and Down. For anyone who enjoys the grungy sound of yesteryear, or just simply loves rocking out, this is an essential.

3good album  Aug 25, 2007
good album. Starts off with a great song "Last Time" and then comes the bands biggest hit with "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" It doesn't keep up the pace but still has some pretty good tracks with "Down", and "Innocent" The rest is pretty hit or miss.

4Not what I expected, glad I bought it...  Apr 22, 2007
I was very hesitant to buy Something Like Human when it came out; I was never a big fan of much music during the "grunge" years or shortly after. I simply prefer music that is more fun rather than stuff that has lyrics that are about how much everything sucks. Now while the lyrics are fairly dark - they are done so with context and meaning. The "stories" of Bad Day and Innocent show this. The music also has more melody than alot of the rock that was around at the time. Brett Scallions is a very good vocalist, I really like the way he delivers the songs with emotion and power.

Song Highlights include: Last Time, Hemorrhage, Bad Day, Prove, Knives and Innocent.

Overall, Something Like Human is a very solid album with some great moments and Fuel, as a band, show their talents. Definitely worth a listen.

4Ear for rock music  Feb 25, 2006
when i first heard hermorrhage, i really felt life was worth living, its the kind of music you never get tired of following the rhythm, i doubt is fuel can come up with a better track through out their entire career.

5AWESOME CD  Sep 28, 2005
Fuel are a great band that has progressed to producing excellent albums such as "SOMETHING LIKE HUMAN". SLH has some excellent songs and is almost as good as "NATURAL SELECTION". My favorite songs on the album would have to be:

1. LAST TIME - 10/10: This song has a catchy chorus and a good beat. An excellent start to the album.

3. EMPTY SPACES - 9/10: Could be a bit faster but still an excellent song with excellent lyrics and awesome guitaring.

all the songs up to 12.

if you like the rock of nickelback or puddle of mudd then i recomended this album to you.
