some gems, some fill Oct 28, 2009 I love Bruce Cockburn's music. Let me come right out and say that. At times he waxes a bit cheesy and overly sincere, but I forgive him that because more often than not he finds a (for lack of a better word) spiritual sound that goes beyond entertainment. Hes a gentle soul--intimately rewarding to see live--and a talented musician. I've heard most of the tracks on this disc many times. Some versions are real gems. Others seem more like fill, tossed in to complete the disc. On the whole a good collection
Essential Bruce Cockburn strutting his stuff Aug 15, 2009 This is a wonderful album. All of Bruce's live albums have been great and this one is no exception. In a way this is the real Bruce Cockburn, by himself. The band recordings are after all studio creations, excellent ones of course, like Inner City Front and Dancing In The Dragon's Jaws, but somehow the Bruce Cockburn experience is not complete without hearing him live and solo.
Lots of favourites like World of Wonders, How I Spent My Fall Vacation, Momma Wants To Barrelhouse All Night Long and mind-bending guitar instrumentals like the echo-enhanced The End Of All Rivers, keep the album consistently mesmerising. This guy is one heck of a guitarist, not in an overtly flashy way, but cool and artistic. His own complexities occasionally see him working hard here, but by and large it flows real smoothly. Occasionally his voice strains, and hey he's no Jim Morrison, but his passion and expression always deliver his punchy lyrics in a most satisfying and captivating way. Nice beefy recording with plenty of presence. Brilliant.
Some real gems, lots of fire Jun 29, 2009 I'm a fairly new Cockburn fan, and recently got to see him perform live & solo. If you hear one of his songs performed with a band, then hear him perform the same song solo, you will be amazed at what he can accomplish all by himself on one guitar. My favorite songs on this album are the mesmerizing World of Wonders (not political), If a Tree Falls (fantastic guitar, green more than political), and Child of the Wind (Country Western style lullaby, more typical of his earlier folk roots). To the person who decried that this is not a country album, fair enough, but explore his back catalog or this album and discover the wide range of what he can do. He doesn't censor himself, or limit his stylistic explorations, isn't that refreshing in a world of mass produced crap? Not his best album but well worth it.

Cockburn Guitar Tops/Singing, Well Jun 24, 2009 This set of recordings doesn't show off Mr. Cockburn's voice very well. May be because it's a collection of live gigs. Nonetheless it becomes difficult to listen to after the first disc. When an instrumental pops up, Cockburn's genius rekindles.

mesmerizing guitar work Jun 01, 2009 I've seen Bruce with a band and seen him solo acoustic; and the solo acoustic performances truly shine brightly--as does this recording. There is some mesmerizing guitar work here, as Bruce's seemingly effortless (but incredible) technique appears to get better with age. Unfortunately, his voice appears to be not quite as strong as it once was, but his singing is still excellent. The opening World of Wonders is terrific, and the reworked acoustic version of Rocket Laucher puts the original electric version to shame. Even the "sound check" samples have some interesting and pleasing guitar work. This is a great addition to the Cockburn catalog.
