Description:

Not your typical boring diet book, this is a tart-tongued, no-holds-barred wakeup call to all women who want to be thin. With such blunt advice as, "Soda is liquid Satan" and "You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin," it's a rallying cry for all savvy women to start eating healthy and looking radiant. Unlike standard diet books, it actually makes the reader laugh out loud with its truthful, smart-mouthed revelations. Behind all the attitude, however, there's solid guidance. Skinny Bitch espouses a healthful lifestyle that promotes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and encourages women to get excited about feeling "clean and pure and energized."

2Very funny but a little too intense  Nov 17, 2009
This book was cracking me up big time until I got to the chapters about meat. While I was expecting some of it, most of it was a little intense. I would definitely not read this book if you love meat, or skip those chapters. I really regret reading those chapters because I would have otherwise really enjoyed the book. I realize the meat industry is insane and disgusting, but I still love to eat meat. Reading actual comments from people who had worked in the meat industry was insane. It definitely made me want to never eat meat again. It actually made me want to puke. Yeah, why did I read it? I don't know. The rest of the book is really interesting and I love their approach. I know a ton of people who need to read this book. Their opinions are a little extreme. Well, a lot extreme. Basically they are telling you that you can never be skinny unless you become a vegan. Everything but organic veggies are bad for you and will kill you. It's one thing to become a vegetarian and it's another thing to believe that the only things you can eat are organic. It's proof that everything we are putting into our body really is bad for us in the end. Nothing is safe anymore. What has this world come to really.

3Concerning the Audiobook  Nov 05, 2009
This review is pertains ONLY to the audiobook. As a vegetarian who is working toward being a vegan, I am always looking for inspiration and new sources of material to help me reinforce what has always been a difficult transition for me. Staying on the wagon, so to speak, is something I have to work at each day. I purchased Skinny Bitch as an audiobook to listen to on my iPod. That was a mistake. I'm sure that had I gotten the print version, I would be giving this title a 5-star glowing review. I found the information, the tone, and the humor very much to my liking, and it is definitely motivational. The recording, however, infuriated me.

The reader, Renee Rodman, has a voice that didn't particularly please me. I found her inflection and timing awkward...but that's largely a matter of taste, and I wouldn't judge an audiobook harshly based on that alone. In fact, I've listened to other audiobooks narrated by Ms. Rodman without any complaint. What I object to with Skinny Bitch applies primarily to Rodman's reading of Chapter 6. In Chapter 6, entitled, "You Are What You Eat," the authors describe the horrific processes employed in industrial slaughterhouses. As a Southerner, I was red with anger less than 5 minutes into the reading. In no other part of the book does Rodman display a Southern accent of any kind, but the moment she begins reading quotations from slaughterhouse workers who tortured animals, she puts on this gravelly, affected, redneck facsimile of what is supposed to pass for a Southern accent. People slaughter pigs, poultry, and beef cattle in every part of the country, so I resent (more than I can say) having this woman characterize these soulless and violent people as Southerners when she obviously doesn't speak that way, herself. The authors gave no indication or judgment in their wording that would justify Rodman's choice to read Chapter 6 in this way, and--honestly--it ruined the book for me that first go around. I have listened to the book several times since, but I always skip chapter 6.

If you buy this book, and I recommend that you do, PLEASE don't buy the audiobook. It's not a good reading, and Chapter 6 is serious information that every American should know about and force themselves to face. Having it cartooned down into a redneck joke cheapens the material and promotes an undeserved stereotype.

Get the print version. Read it. And then...try to go vegetarian or vegan. It's good for your body; it will make you healthier; it will make weight loss easier for you; and it's the right thing to do.

5Very Informative Book  Nov 04, 2009
I was pleasantly surprised by the information available in this book. It is evident that a tremendous amount of research as I learned things regarding the treatment of animals, meat products, and diary that I had no idea were the norm. This book has changed my life, in that I have totally altered my eating habits and have a new found respect for eating the fruits of the land. Although the language at times may be a little 'risque', with an open mind you will be surprisingly enlightened. I totally recommend this book to anyone questioning the reasoning behind becoming a Vegetarian. In a previous review somone indicated this book supported eating disorders, I totally disagree as choices are offered that allows you to have a healthy food regimen. Thank you Ladies for opening my eyes. Those who are on the surface regarding purchasing...just do it, you will not be sorry.

5Awesome! Stop dieting Start eating right  Nov 03, 2009
Honestly reading this book was a turning point for me, I stopped thinking about becoming a vegetarian and finally became one. The book is hilarious and brutally honest. Some of the opinions are extreme but honestly, I appreciated that they didn't sugar coat it. Would definitely recommend the recipe book as all the recipes are DIVINE! Vegetarian or not my entire family enjoyed every single recipe that came from this book. I disagree with those saying the statements in the book are false as I checked many of them with nutritionists and online. Of course there is always differing opinions when it comes to nutrition but the majority of claims in this book are based on studies or at least agree with ones I've read.

I've been a vegetarian for 2 years now and I would never go back to eating meat. The health benefits, environmental benefits, and of course moral benefits make me wonder how I was ever not a vegetarian. Not to mention that as soon as I stopped eating meat excess weight seemed to melt before my eyes, and I wasn't dieting! I was eating foods I love. It's crazy to think where I would be today if I hadn't bought this book. But I'm glad I did. I'm in the best shape and healthier than I've ever been, and I haven't been on a diet since. I'm a skinny bitch just like the book promised! lmao I just eat healthy, being a vegetarian makes this easy to do.

HIGHLY recommend! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. :-)

5Conflicted  Nov 02, 2009
I just finished this book, and I remain conflicted. It was an easy read - I completed it at one sitting more or less. It was also sort of funny. The thing is - after the first few profanity laced name calling lines - I lost interest and wanted to focus on the more positives attributes of the book. It got distracting. What I did love about this book was the inclusion of the hard truths about factory farming and the boiling down of science into terms I could easily understand. This was particularly useful to me in the sugar chapter ! (I'd sooner die than eat meat, eggs, or dairy but sugar is like a siren's song to me argh!) It wasn't until the end (and in fact the very last page which I almost missed) that the bitchy swagger was toned down and laughingly explained away. All in all, I'm keeping "Naturally Thin in my bag as an emergency reminder book and keeping this one in the kitchen for the meal suggestions, the links, and the food lists.
