In the beginning, There was Bessie Smith! Mar 26, 2000 When you hold an ancient treasure up to the light and put a magnifying glass to your ears, you can hear where all the modern wonders wet their chops: at the Fountain of Bessie. Listen to Bessie Smith's Sings The Blues and you are musically at ground zero. It is primitive, prehistoric, and precious, very precious. Listen close and you can hear Billie Holiday, Louie Armstrong, Ella, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, Muddy... Everybody who ever laid down a blues track or picked up a harmonicaEvery branch on the Blues Family Tree, in all its colorful foliage, is routed through the roots and all of the roots go through Bessie Smith. I can give ten reasons why what I am saying is true but it would be easier to refer you to the ten tracks on this CD.
