Unusual and that's not good Oct 01, 2009 I bought this album because I think I heard one track that was somewhat appealing and I had been very pleasantly surprised by Wayne Brady's release and thought this might be another successful attempt from an unexpected source but this was a disappointment to put it mildly - the lyrics make me laugh out loud and the scores are uninspired -I knew immediately that Mr. Howard had decided not only could he sing but could write songs as well - I played it for my 17 year old daughter and she agreed that this was an cd that never would have happened had it not been for this actors notoriety. I think other reviewers are just enamored with Mr. Howard - if you are a true music fan - of any genre - don't do it - unless of course you love a sense of the absurd 0 the last track is an absolute riot
Prompt May 05, 2009 My order was even more prompt than stated, and arrived in the condition advertised. I was very pleased and will do business with this company again.
Go Big Or Go Home!! Apr 20, 2009 You know I respect any artist who stays true to his/her vision no matter what, and nobody should fault Terrence Howard for staying true to himself on his debut solo album. I think the safer route would have been for him to make an R&B album that sounded like every other R&B album out there, but he went for a sound a bit more `out of the box.' And I give him props for that - it takes balls for an actor-turned-recording-artist to take such chances on their first album. The sound you end up with is a lot of throwback soul and blues flavor, with a little symphony and pop on the side.
I will agree with some of the other reviewers who have said that sometimes it seems his vision is a bit ambitious, and the end result doesn't *quite* work (i.e. "Mr. Johnson's Lawn"). However, when he manages to pull it all together, it REALLY works. I'd even argue he has moments of greatness when he sounds as seasoned as any other artist who has been doing this for 20 years.
I also know that others have also faulted his vocal abilities, but I honestly like the raspiness of his voice - even in his more guttural moments. And for those times when he does push his voice a little too far, you can still feel his passion coming through for what he's singing about. Standout cuts are "Plenty," "She Was Mine," and "Sanctuary." Honorable mention to "Shine Through It" and "I Remember When" (whose harmonica and piano seem to be seriously channeling some 80's Stevie Wonder).
He Can't Sing...but the music is great! Mar 02, 2009 I was disappointed with this prodcut...the music is great, but Terrance Howard's vocals are not good...
Surprised Feb 18, 2009 A courageous piece of work from an African American artist. Not your classic R&B CD. If you like the many genre's of todays music, you'll love this one. Without a doubt, there's immense talent in this young man, and it all seemed to burst out at one time into a beautifully well crafted project. I could comment on each track, but why? Can't decribe the gut wrenching honesty of "No.1 Fan", or the skill and precision of acoustic work displayed on "Spanish Love Affair". The opening track is also one to be admired. This CD is so surprisingly complete, I couldn't help but share my thoghts with others. Can't wait for a follow up.
