Description:

If Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual evokes memories dominated mostly by her cartoonish image, then try to get over it so you can pay attention to the music. Simply, Cyndi Lauper has a wonderful, emotive voice. Her vocals have an impish quality, but there's also tremendous strength, articulation, and nuance. Who would disagree that "Time After Time" (later covered by both Everything but the Girl and Miles Davis, if you need further proof of her credibility) is as heartstring-tugging as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is frivolous, or that "All Through the Night" is as longing as "She-Bop" is intense? The instrumental arrangements are quite inventive and rich, and although the musicality is pointedly '80s, the album sounds more winsome than dated. The title of Lauper's debut isn't self-deprecating or even self-parodying; it's self-congratulatory. Listen to it again, and you'll find this pleasure to be far from guilty. --Beth Bessmer

4Better than vinyl  Jun 01, 2009
This review is for the SACD release only. So much of the 1980s hits are best remembered as heard on the radio, or at best, in CD quality at the supermarket, etc. So I can understand why they would put out a single layer SACD of Cyndi Lauper for die hard fans. It's single layer because you already own the CD. An SACD format is required to get those shrill notes, squeaks and screams. Surprisingly, even some of the synth work benefits from super-sonic playback. I find my ear drums quake from the keyboard at the start of "All Through the Night".

2Hardly any improvement to justify SACD price  Jan 02, 2008
Putting the material aside, this disc is a dissapointment. If it had that "analogue" sound that just blows me away on many other SACD releases which were done better and in 5.1, (i.e. "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits), I'd find myself reaching for it 'time after time' for many hours of musical bliss. The singer does not come into my listening room but remains shrouded behind a digital realm. Alas, it is just ok and with not enough discernable improvement over a regular cd, especially considering the price, so it will likely spend it's life on a shelf undisturbed but for the occasional dusting. Recommended only if the artist is special to you.

4SACD review  Apr 11, 2005
This is a terrific album that still holds up pretty well when played 20 years later.....but how I wish this SACD release was in multi channel format! It sounds terrific, but with some proper care, a 5.1 mix of this could be awesome. Alas, maybe one day someone will do it properly

5classic 80's  Mar 17, 2005
I believe the first time i heard this album I may have been 3 or 4, i dont remember. What i do remember is that i loved it. I remember dancing to "All Through the Night" & "She Bop". Hearing this cd again, now that im in my 20's really takes me back to the days of the 80s, when i was little, and music was good.
